SM Supermalls empowers MSMEs’ future through inclusive resilience

Micro, small, and medium enterprise (MSME) tenants and Department of Trade and Industry (DTI)-supported entrepreneurs gear up for resilience through SM Supermalls’ nationwide Business Continuity Plan workshops.

SM Supermalls champions resilience as a shared responsibility, empowering communities and micro, small, and medium enterprise (MSME) tenants nationwide.

For SM Supermalls, resilience remains an essential pillar in its pursuit of sustainability. Without safe, secure, and prepared communities, the vision of sustainable development becomes difficult to achieve. This is why the company believes that promoting resilience is not only a matter of operational readiness but a responsibility to the communities and businesses that form the backbone of the economy.

At the heart of this commitment are micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs). These businesses are often the most vulnerable to disruptions brought about by natural and man-made hazards. Yet, they represent a critical force in the national economy—generating jobs, driving local commerce, and sustaining livelihoods. Recognizing their importance, SM Supermalls has made it a priority to help cultivate an MSME sector that is resilient.

Across its network, close to 70 percent of SM Supermalls’ tenants are currently MSMEs. These businesses operate under unique lessee contracts that acknowledge their specific needs and challenges. To support them, SM not only provides space but also promotes an environment that values preparedness and long-term continuity.

Beyond providing retail spaces, SM Supermalls promotes micro, small, and medium enterprise (MSME) resilience through emergency drills and dedicated Business Continuity Planning (BCP) initiatives.

SM Supermalls’ most notable resilience initiative for its MSME tenants is a dedicated Business Continuity Planning (BCP) program launched in 2024. This capacity-building initiative enables businesses to develop tailored Business Continuity Plans and implement adaptive measures to reduce the impact of disruptions.

SM’s tenants are each provided with free access to 5GB of remote digital storage where they can securely store critical business documents such as their BCPs, permits, registrations, and insurance policies, among others. In the event of a disaster, access to these documents becomes seamless, allowing faster processing of insurance claims and a quicker return to operations.

To further scale its impact, SM Supermalls established a public-private partnership with the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), formalized through a Memorandum of Agreement in 2024. Together with ARISE Philippines, a United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR)-affiliated private sector alliance for disaster resilience, the partnership aims to ensure that 6,000 MSMEs have robust BCPs by the end of 2027.

Business continuity subject matter experts guide micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in crafting their own Business Continuity Plans (BCPs) for their company.

The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) – Bureau of Small Medium Enterprise Development and SM Supermalls representatives join together in disaster risk resilience awareness and business continuity for micro, small and medium enterprises.

This collaboration is led by DTI Regional Operations Group Undersecretary Blesila Lantayona and Bureau of Small Medium Enterprise Development (BSMED) Director Emma Asusano, alongside SM Supermalls’ Corporate Resilience Department. The shared goal is clear: to safeguard MSMEs nationwide through proactive preparedness.

One key feature of the initiative is the SM-DTI Calamity Recovery (CARE) Booth, activated during times of calamity. Located in malls with communities impacted by disasters, the booth serves as an accessible touchpoint for MSMEs needing post-disaster support—providing a practical and timely response mechanism that bridges the gap between public resources and private needs.

Additionally, SM Supermalls regularly hosts scheduled BCP workshops for MSMEs in collaboration with DTI. These workshops are conducted in centralized SM locations across various regions and are open to both SM tenants and DTI-assisted MSMEs. During these sessions, business owners are introduced to the various risks posed by different types of disasters and are guided step-by-step in developing their own BCPs. These plans are tailored to the unique nature and geographical location of their operations, and the sessions extend to the BCP testing and validation phase to ensure practical application and effectiveness.

The participants are given one month to finalize their BCPs, which must be approved by their business management and submitted to DTI. Since the program’s launch in September 2024, over 1,500 MSMEs have already undergone training, with more scheduled in the months ahead.

“Resilience is not built overnight, and requires education, commitment, and collaboration across different sectors. Knowing this, SM Supermalls continues to invest in long-term resilience not just for its business, but for the broader ecosystem of MSMEs it supports,” said SM Supermalls President Steven Tan. “In doing so, we are reinforcing the fundamental truth that sustainable progress is only possible when communities and businesses are prepared to face the challenges of tomorrow.”

Devirginized’: The ‘Virgin’ Playwrights of CCP’s VLF XX: Hinog and their naked narratives

Virginity might be a social construct but it rests at the core of Virgin Labfest (VLF). Since its establishment in 2005, the nation’s biggest theater festival has given the word a more intimate yet mature definition.

Virginity, within the context of VLF, refers to the primal act of becoming one with performance art for the first time. Under the theme “Hinog,” the festival features 12 untried, untested, and unstaged plays in its milestone year.

Among the chosen narratives written by ‘virgin’ playwrights are Ang Bata Kag Ang Ilaga by Liane Carlo SuelanPolar Coordinates by Ade ValenzonaNelsito Gomez’s Anniversary, and YOJ’s TBT: Takbo, Batang Tondo.

Deriving fresh tales from tender memories

In handwritten diary entries, YOJ poured her frustrations as a child eager to find her voice. TBT: Takbo, Batang Tondo came into fruition through her colorful childhood stories: “Naging malaking dagok sa ‘kin ang pandemya dahil lumaki akong laman ng kalsadaPinili kong sariwain ang aking kabataan sa aking dula.”

Suelan also developed Ang Bata Kag Ang Ilaga based on a haunting memory: “It was simple, really. There was a baby rat in our bodega, and I was torn between leaving and protecting it.” Abandoning the creature made Suelan perceive children as “small humans” who are very much capable of thinking and feeling.

Valenzona, playwright of Polar Coordinates, seconded Suelan’s sentiments. The desire to express his innermost feelings pushed him to write the script in 2018. “Hindi ko alam no’n kung paano ko sasabihin kaya dinaan ko sa kuwento. No’ng natapos na ang unang dibuho, nagkaro’n ako ng pakiramdam na mas mapapalalim pa,” he recounted.

For Gomez, drafting the script felt like a whirlwind romance. He stumbled upon a shared post of VLF while scrolling on social media. Gomez took the approaching deadline as a challenge and an opportunity: “I kept asking myself, ‘Kaya ko ba in nine days?’. I ended up writing Anniversary in two.”

Life’s naked truths on the VLF XX: Hinog stage

After the passing of his mentor and friend Floy Quintos, Gomez addressed his anxieties through developing Anniversary: “I wrote it two months before he passed in 2024. People need people, especially in the darkest of times. They could be in the form of a really pushy lola or someone warm like Floy.”

Suelan, on the other hand, expounded on the grievances of a curious child in need of connection. Letting the inner child play is the heart of his script. “Ang Bata Kag Ang Ilaga pushes us to wonder if we can brush off preconceived notions and extend kindness,” he elaborated.

The ultimate dream of being “devirginized” at VLF XX: Hinog

Art rests within YOJ’s soul and VLF only reaffirmed her decision to lead the life of a creative, “Halos limang taon din ang tinakbo ng aking dula [TBT] mula VLF 16, VLF 18, at ngayon sa VLF XX. Kung paano mo talaga niyakap ang sining, ganoon din ang magiging pagtanggap ng tanghalan sa ‘yo.

Having his script featured in the festival’s milestone year is the ultimate dream come true for Valenzona. “Nagtagpo [kasi] ang aking passion for writing and profession as a theater artist,” he commented with a grateful smile.

Valenzona even likened his VLF experience to “actual devirginizing” as it invited excitement and second thoughts. “Gusto ko nang palitan ang kasabihang ‘kill your darlings’. Grow your darlings instead,” he suggested.

“It is such an honor to be part of VLF, especially because Ilaga is the first ‘serious’ play that I have written,” exclaimed Suelan after his dedication to polishing his characters paid off.

Meanwhile, Gomez is an avid fan of VLF but he never dreamed of becoming one of its ‘virgin’ playwrights. He shared his favorite part of the experience: “One of the amazing things about VLF is the mentorship where you get invaluable feedback from professionals who aim to augment your voice.”

Childhood tales and haunting memories come alive with the perfect blend of bravery and dedication through VLF. For ‘virgin’ playwrights YOJ, Suelan, Gomez, and Valenzona, the festival is more than just a safe space for fearless storytelling. Ultimately, the VLF stage witnessed their inexplicable need to impart, understand, and be understood as artists.

Catch YOJ’s TBT: Takbo, Batang Tondo, Suelan’s Ang Bata Kag Ang IlagaPolar Coordinates by Valenzona, and Gomez’s Anniversary at VLF XX: Hinog until June 29, 2025, at the CCP Tanghalang Ignacio Gimenez (Black Box Theater).

CCP celebrates Intramuros Administration’s 46th founding anniversary with the revival of Intramuros Evenings

With a shared goal to promote the Filipino national identity, culture, and heritage, the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP) and Intramuros Administration (IA) collaborate to bring back Intramuros Evenings

In the late 1990s, Intramuros regularly presented cultural performances and curated the Intramuros Evenings, featuring the best of Philippine artists and performing groups.

“Together with the CCP, we are reviving that flagship program with the staging of four Intramuros Evenings this year as part of our commitment to elevate Intramuros as a premier cultural and touristic destination,” said Rhea Cy, Head of the Tourism Promotions Division of the Intramuros Administration.

Intramuros Evenings featured performances from CCP resident companies including the Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra (PPO), Ballet Philippines, and Tanghalang Pilipino. In 2023, the CCP successfully restaged two productions from its Out-of-the-Box (OTB) series, ‘Isang Gabi ng Sarsuwela’ and ‘Ang Kasal ni Figaro’, under the beloved IA program.

As the IA celebrates their 46th year of stewardship, preservation, and vibrant promotion of the country’s famous walled city, their revival of Intramuros Evenings with the CCP not only enriches the cultural landscape of Intramuros, but also strengthens the long-standing partnership between the two institutions who have always championed the enduring legacy of Philippine arts and culture.

“Intramuros Evenings will delight the community once again with more CCP productions as we continue to collaborate with the Intramuros Administration to preserve what is inherently Filipino and celebrate the best of the best in performing arts through this program,” said Dennis Marasigan, CCP Vice President and Artistic Director.

The CCP and IA have formalized their partnership during the press launch of IA’s Intramuros Summer Festival and Intramuros Passport with the signing of a Memorandum of Agreement to bring more exciting cultural shows to Intramuros.

For latest updates on the CCP productions under Intramuros Evenings, follow the CCP official social media accounts on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Tiktok, and visit the CCP website (www.culturalcenter.gov.ph) for tickets and other inquiries.

Bustos becomes first Region 3 LGU with cutting edge emergency response system

Bustos in Bulacan province has just become the first local government unit in Region 3 to be equipped with the high technology public safety communication system used in the US and Europe.

Mayor Francis Albert Juan inaugurated the first class municipality’s command center Monday, April 21, with National E911 Office Executive Director Francis Fajardo hailing the move as a godsend to the municipality and the region.

The Bustos Command Center is manned by LGU call handlers trained by the National E911 office, 911 operators working 24/7 and sophisticated monitoring systems and emergency dispatch tools.

Fajardo said the cutting-edge system can quickly, efficiently and accurately respond to emergency calls because it can pinpoint the precise location and identity of the caller, among other things. It integrates seamlessly with other communication systems, identifies and eliminates prank callers, monitors and responds to all calls simultaneously and ensures quick response on the scene of the emergency.

The Executive Director praised Mayor Juan’s initiative in prioritizing public safety for his locality, thus giving Bustos an emergency response command center that is at par with emergency communication systems used in developed countries around the world.

“Young local officials like Mayor Juan are forward-looking and always open to innovation,” said ED Fajardo, commending the mayor and his municipality for heeding the government’s call for LGUs to put up their own emergency response systems that use the latest technology. “They will provide a lifeline to all Filipinos”.

Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) Secretary Johnvic Remulla has made a unified 911 system as a high-priority initiative during his term, with the aim of improving emergency response nationwide via a highly reliable, flexible and feature-rich system for handling calls and transmitting information. Mayor Juan and Bustos, Bulacan were one of the first LGUs to heed the call.

“This has been my dream even as a barangay captain – to render good and efficient public service to the citizens of Bustos, to protect and serve constituents and offer hope to our town. Now that we have this (cutting edge) system in place, once you’re in Bustos, just dial 911 and we will take care of your emergency, be it fire, crime, petty crimes or vehicular accidents, I know we will respond fast. We are the first to do this in Bulacan and in the whole of Region 3, by the way,” Mayor Juan said proudly.

Vehicular accidents are the most frequent reason for emergency calls, said Mayor Juan – a statistic shared by Bustos with other LGUs and compatible with data from the Department of Transportation.

The national government has also prioritized enhanced disaster preparedness and response in its agenda. President Ferdinand R. Marcos, Jr. himself has repeatedly underscored the need to improve the capacity of communities to be prepared so they can prevent and reduce the impact of disasters in their localities, stressing the need for science-based innovations on disaster response and asking LGUs to work together towards this goal.
