Sensory-friendly screening of “Firefly” shines a light on inclusion

In celebration of National Autism Consciousness Week, SM Cares, SM Cinema, Autism Society Philippines (ASP), and GMA Pictures partnered to host a successful sensory-friendly screening of the award-winning film “Firefly” on January 17, 2025. Over 2,000 participants across 10 SM malls, including children on the autism spectrum and their families, enjoyed a heartwarming and inclusive movie experience.

“Tuwing pumapasok kami sa mga SM malls, damang-dama namin acceptance, accomodation, and appreciation. It is the norm here,” said Autism Society Philippines (ASP) Chair Emerita Dang Uy Koe.

Creating a welcoming space

The “Lights Up, Sounds Down” event went beyond entertainment. By adjusting lights and volume, creating a relaxed atmosphere, and allowing for movement and vocalizations, the screening catered to the specific needs of attendees on the autism spectrum. This empowered them to enjoy the movie at their own pace and comfort level.

Autism Society Philippines (ASP) National Spokesperson Mona Magno-Veluz shares a message in a video celebrating National Autism Consciousness Week.

“At SM Supermalls, we firmly believe that creating spaces where every individual feels valued, respected, and included is a responsibility we hold dearly.  This is a way of life here,” said SM Cares Program Director for Disability Affairs Engr. Bien Mateo.

Ongoing commitment

Positive feedback from families echoed the event’s success. Many expressed appreciation for the inclusive environment, highlighting the joy and comfort it provided. This powerful experience underscores the importance of catering to the autism community’s needs.

SM Cares: Championing inclusion

A commitment to inclusivity requires ongoing effort. SM demonstrates this by investing in employee training programs to better support individuals on the autism spectrum and their families. Additionally, SM Cinema prioritizes accessibility features within their theaters, creating a welcoming environment for all guests.

SM Cares is the Corporate Social Responsibility arm of SM Prime Holdings, with programs that support communities, promote social inclusion, and care for the environment. Aside from the program on Persons with Disabilities (PWDs), its advocacies include Programs for the Environment, Women and Breastfeeding Mothers, Children and Youth, Senior Citizens, and the SM Bike-friendly initiative.

Built to protect: SM Prime’s flood mitigation strategy

SM Prime Holdings (SM Prime), a pioneer in sustainability initiatives in the Philippines, has long been committed to environmental stewardship and building resilient structures. From its early adoption of water recycling and innovative energy management programs to operationalizing renewable energy and waste management, SM Prime has consistently prioritized sustainability. This commitment was further underscored by the company’s active participation in the recent Asia Pacific Ministerial Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction, hosted by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources and the Office of Civil Defense. At the conference, Hans Sy, Chairman of the Executive Committee, emphasized the critical role of resilience in urban populations and how innovation and multi-sectoral collaboration are essential for the country’s sustainable development.

The Philippines is highly vulnerable to natural hazards, especially tropical cyclones and typhoons, making disaster risk management (DRM) and resilient infrastructure crucial. SM Prime employs a hydrological survey approach in building locations to determine flood susceptibility.

SM City Marikina prioritizes safety with flood mitigation measures, ensuring a secure and comfortable environment for the community.

SM City Marikina, elevated on 246 concrete stilts, allows floodwaters to flow beneath, keeping occupants safe during severe weather events.

A strong example of such resilience lies in SM City Marikina, whose unique structure was lauded by the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction. Built beside the Marikina River, an area prone to flooding during severe weather events, SM City Marikina stands on 246 concrete stilts. This innovative design allows floodwaters to flow beneath the structure, leaving the mall and its occupants safe and dry. During Typhoon Ondoy (Ketsana) in 2009, which devastated surrounding areas, SM City Marikina remained intact, serving as a refuge for those affected by the disaster. Similar to the stilts methodology, SM City Cabanatuan’s lower ground parking level serves as a temporary catchment basin.

SM City Cabanatuan demonstrates SM Prime’s dedication to flood mitigation through its robust design.

SM City Cabanatuan’s lower ground parking level doubles as a temporary flood catchment basin, a crucial element of our flood mitigation strategy.

Beyond these two malls, this promise of flood resilience is present in other properties. A key innovation employed by SM Prime is the implementation of rainwater catchment basins in its malls. These massive underground tanks, similar in size to swimming pools, collect and store rainwater from the street level, mitigating flooding in surrounding communities. Twenty-nine SM Supermalls across the country are equipped with these basins, boasting a combined capacity of 85,400 cubic meters – enough to fill over 34 Olympic-sized swimming pools!

Built to protect, SM City Masinag incorporates a rainwater catchment basin to minimize the impact of heavy rainfall.

SM City Masinag’s rainwater catchment basin collected 8,652.60 cubic meters of rainwater during Super Typhoon Carina.

Designed with the community in mind, SM City Masinag incorporates flood mitigation measures for safety.

These catchment basins have proven invaluable during recent typhoons. For instance, SM City Masinag’s rainwater catchment basin played a crucial role during Super Typhoon Carina (Gaemi) last July 2024, effectively managing the increased water volume. It collected 8,652.60 cubic meters of rainwater, equivalent to 264 gallons of water. As the first SM mall equipped with a rainwater catchment basin, SM City Masinag was strategically built in a historically flood-prone area, serving as a catch basin for water flowing down from upper Antipolo. In the second half of 2024, SM malls prevented an estimated total of 46,405 cubic meters of rainwater–the volume of 18 Olympic-sized swimming pools–from flooding the surrounding areas.

Mr. Gareth Aboy, a resident and former officer of Vermont Phase 1 Association near SM City Masinag, expressed his gratitude: “The residents of Vermont Park Executive Village of Antipolo would like to extend our thanks and appreciation to SM City Masinag for always being there in our times of need. Thank you for keeping your doors open for our immediate daily needs, your elevated parking spaces for our vehicles, and for keeping your water catchment basin open to help drain the water from our flood-prone village. SM City Masinag has always been and will continue to be a treasure for the residents of Vermont Park Executive Village of Antipolo.”

Sustainability and resilience are at the core of SM Prime’s business strategy. The company invests significantly in these measures, recognizing that the benefits – safer communities, environmental protection, and enhanced business continuity – far outweigh the costs. SM Prime remains committed to building a more resilient future for the communities it serves.

PNP now responds to emergency calls in 3-5 minutes as commitment to DILG’s Revitalized 911 program

Philippine National Police (PNP) responders arrive in the scene in less than five minutes.

Police Brigadier General Warren Gaspar A. Tolito, Director of the PNP Communications and Electronics Service (CES) shared the good news that over 90% of all Police 911 calls can now be responded to in record response time.

The game-changing approach to emergency response is a direct result of the Department of Interior and Local Government’s (DILG) Revitalized Emergency 911 Project which calls for immediate and accurate reaction to emergency calls from citizens and LGUs.

Majority of the emergency calls stem from vehicular accidents, domestic violence, public disturbance, individuals running amok, theft and robbery, Tolito revealed.

Tolito mentioned interesting cases of rescues made in the nick of time, like a woman about to jump off a bridge in Batasan Hills who was pulled to safety by PNP operatives, an abandoned newborn in an ecobag found in a vacant lot in Cabuyao, Laguna that was brought to the hospital just in time to save its life, and the thwarted hijacking of a tanker filled with goods because of swift relay messages between operatives from the scene of the crime in Caloocan to the place of apprehension in Obando, Bulacan.

“At PNP 911, we do not discriminate. There was an incident of someone creating trouble in a Nueva Ecija establishment. Someone from the establishment called 911 and within 5 minutes, the responders were there. The apprehended person in the station was identified as an off-duty officer of the law,” General Tolito added.

Tolito said some cities like Quezon City and Zamboanga City respond really quickly and are very efficient in their emergency response. Areas where the nearest police station is far off take a little longer but still respond within the 3 to 5-minute standard. In Metro Manila areas, traffic sometimes affects response time. He shared that the highest emergency calls come from the Laguna and Cavite areas.

Robert Llaguno, country head of NGA 911 Philippines which provided the PNP with its patented call handling system, said statistics show that after calling 911 (then pressing “1” for Police) it takes less than a minute for such calls to be picked up and average dispatch time of responders is only 40 to 50 seconds. NGA 911 technology is responsible for leveling up emergency capabilities of the PNP and LGUs to standards used in the US and Europe.

Llaguno noted that the PNP’s three-minute response statistics is “comparable and may be even better than that of the States”. “The PNP is determined to sustain this type of response for Filipinos and should be commended for this,” Llaguno said.

Tolito said the PNP is committed to get things done within the 3 to 5 minutes standard set by PNP Chief Police General Rommel Francisco D. Marbil based on a directive from President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. last June “so we can be at par or better than other countries”. “We have accepted the challenge and even our Regional Directors are doing simulation exercises in the field just to show how serious we are about this,” Tolito said.

“I think what drives our PNP to sustain this kind of response is the joy of responding and helping our kababayans on the ground who really need help the most. It’s very fulfilling to be able to help them by responding fast, it’s just that we did not have this type of system before. Now that we have it, our PNP has high morale because they have a clear sense of direction in their patrolling.”

Tolito added that “emergencies can happen anytime, and we are happy that we can respond efficiently and accurately. It is in our nature as Filipinos to want to help our fellow men, in whatever way”.

At the National Summit on Emergency Response held in Mandaluyong City last August, the DILG’s E911 National Office signed a memorandum of understanding with NGA911, for a proof-of-concept use of its Next Generation 911 technology to power the Revitalized 911 program of the country. US-based NGA 911 LLC, mother company of NGA Philippines, provides the 911 system of California, USA.

“The PNP, the E911 National Office of the DILG powered by NGA911’s cutting-edge technology, data-driven analytics, and PLDT’s network are at work daily elevating 911 of the Philippines to a higher level,” Gen. Tolito concluded.

‘IMAGINE TONDO’ NARRATES THE PRACTICALITY OF ART IN LIFE

For Kian Aze Cordero, a student from Timoteo Paez Integrated School, art has become a helpful tool in coping with academic stress and emotional challenges. His experience at Imagine Tondo, a cultural exchange collaboration between the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP) and the Korea Arts and Culture Education Service (KACES) has solidified this belief. “Art just calms me down,” said Cordero.

Highlighting the intangible benefits of creative expression, Filipino artist-teachers and invited Korean experts in various fields of arts engaged in special curriculum training, integrating art into the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) framework of the Department of Education (DepEd). This curriculum was implemented in Imagine Tondo, a two-week workshop held from September 23 to October 4, 2024.

To give the world of art the spotlight it rightfully deserves in the academe, Imagine Tondo kicked off with training for the participating educators, giving them ample time to formulate art-centered activities tailored to children

The project aimed to foster and strengthen community bonds among the young people in Tondo. Offering them a safe space to express themselves, Imagine Tondo also provided the opportunity to connect with others through creativity.

“Imagine Tondo describes the happiness that art and culture can bring. For the past two years, CCP and KACES have been partners in emphasizing the essence of art in life and culture, sharing the invaluable experience of artmaking with younger generations,” shared KACES President Eun-Sil Park.

Through Imagine Tondo, both Filipino and Korean mediators and participants engaged in cultural exchanges, with each sharing what they learned from each other and from the students they encountered.

CCP Vice President and Artistic Director Dennis M. Marasigan expressed his appreciation for the partnership with KACES and conveyed his aspiration to continue the program, envisioning how it could influence the Philippine cultural landscape in the future.

“We can institutionalize the Imagine Tondo program so it can be replicated in different schools, regions, and areas of the country. This can be done on a national scale,” said Marasigan.

Beyond the basic definition of art and the donation of textbooks and other learning materials, Imagine Tondo illustrated how art contributes to and affects everyday life. At the core of the recent two-week workshop for artist-teachers and students was learning how to incorporate art and culture into everyday life.

Along with the special curriculum, reflections and learnings of the Filipino and Korean mediators were implemented with the 252 students from Lakan Dula High School, Gen. Gregorio Del Pilar Elementary School, Raja Soliman Science and Technology High School, and AHA! Learning Center.

Althea David, another participant from Timoteo Paez Integrated School, shared her fondness for creating green landscapes with oil pastels. Through Imagine Tondo, she realized the reason behind her love for the arts: “I find joy in making art. It is how I relax when I’m stressed.”

While some participants viewed art as a hobby, the CCP and KACES’ Imagine Tondo helped them understand and appreciate art’s role in shaping their identities and improving their lives.

“We hope to instill learning in the arts for the children, promoting our culture in everyday life,” shared Marasigan. He acknowledged that the success of Imagine Tondo is a testament to the artistic potential of children if given the right resources and environment. The program proved that, with support, children can grow artistically and lead imaginative lives without barriers.

KACES President Park emphasized the importance of fostering an appreciation for arts and culture in the next generation. By allowing participants to experience art through individual and group activities, Imagine Tondo demonstrated that art is an integral part of life and culture.

“Above all, the future generation of children is what matters most. Their dreams must be protected,” added Park.

Through the activities facilitated by the mediators, the children became active participants in their own lives. They gained unforgettable experiences, new friendships, and a newfound appreciation for how art intersects with life and culture.

CCP BRINGS THE CLASSIC OPERA OF PUCCINI TO DUMAGUETE CITY

To share the experience of opera with Filipinos in the provinces, the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP) recently brought Italian composer Giacomo Puccini’s timeless tragedy La Bohème to Silliman University in Dumaguete City.

This outreach program was made possible with the National Music Competitions for Young Artists (NAMCYA), Filipinas Opera Society Foundation, Inc. (FOSFI), Silliman University, and the City Government of Dumaguete.

“By bringing La Bohème to Dumaguete, the CCP hopes to ignite the spirits of those who share the ideals of Puccini’s young and brave Bohemians,” shared CCP President Kaye C. Tinga during the opening program.

Exploring the fragility of life through the artistic lens, Puccini’s La Bohème was based on the novel Scenes de la vie de Bohème by French writer Henri Murger. It narrates the colorful lives of young Bohemians residing in the Latin Quarter of Paris in the 1840s.

The tragic love story of La Bohème marked Puccini’s rise to fame, transforming him into a fully-fledged original composer when it first premiered in Turin, Italy, in 1896. Known for its remarkable arias and scenes, La Bohème has inspired numerous artistic interpretations such as Jonathan Larson’s rock musical Rent and Baz Luhrmann’s award-winning jukebox film Moulin Rouge.

With its timeless perspective on life, love, and friendship, the opera continuously resonates with audiences across generations, proving that heartfelt art transcends time and borders.

Directed by Alexander Cortez, the four-act opera successfully showcased local talent including Viva Voce Voice Lab performers Iona Ventocilla-Borja, Nomher Nival, Myramae Meneses, Carlo Falcis, Roby Malubay, Fritz Rivera, and Raymond Yadao. Meanwhile, Viva Voce Voice Lab artistic director and soprano singer Camille Lopez-Molina handled the music direction.

Presenting Puccini’s most beloved opera in Dumaguete is a part of the larger vision that the CCP and its partner organizations are striving towards—inspiring a deep appreciation for opera among the next generation of artists, musicians, and audiences.

The world of opera, often associated with extravagant sets and elaborate costumes, may seem distant and unattainable for aspiring Filipino artists. However, this misconception is precisely what the CCP aims to challenge and overcome. This is why the CCP has been showcasing live opera performances such as Puccini’s Turandot, Gaetano Donizetti’s L’Elisir d’Amore (The Elixir of Love), and Lucia di Lammermoor.

For the past eight years, the CCP also presented The Met: Live in HD, a series of live opera performances transmitted in high-definition video via satellite from the Metropolitan Opera in New York.

With its allied partners, the CCP also presented the Progetto Puccini masterclasses with mentors Fabio Armiliato, Mariano Panico, and Lorena Zaccaria. The classes consisted of workshops and training to selected Filipino opera singers. In addition to celebrating Puccini’s legacy, the masterclasses hope to nurture Filipino musicality by cultivating a new generation of opera lovers.

The second phase of the Progetto Puccini project will feature performances of La Bohème, to be performed in Italy from June 15 to 30, 2025, with participating Filipino artists.

By including operas in its annual artistic programs like the Progetto Puccini masterclasses, the CCP and its allied organizations are progressing in making the art form more accessible for Filipino audiences.

CCP President Tinga also reiterated her belief in the CCP’s mission to preserve, promote, and develop the Philippine cultural heritage by supporting the creation, appreciation, and dissemination of the arts in all its forms. “The CCP is not only keeping the tradition of opera alive in the Philippines, it’s also ensuring that these masterpieces remain relevant to contemporary audiences,” she added.
