CCP 21AM COLLECTION ARTWORKS ON DISPLAY AT THE NATIONAL GALLERY SINGAPORE

The Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP), through its Visual Arts and Museum Division, has loaned five significant artworks from its collection to the National Gallery Singapore (NGS), reinforcing its ongoing efforts to bring Philippine art to a wider international audience. This initiative not only showcases the depth of Filipino creativity but also helps strengthen cultural ties across Southeast Asia, fostering greater appreciation and collaboration in the region’s vibrant arts scene.

The artworks from the CCP 21st Century Art Museum (21AM) Collection — Painting No. 1 by National Artist Jose Joya; Portrait of Fernando Zóbel and Fernando Zóbel Lecturing on Art and a Student Listening II, both by David Cortez Medalla; Calligraphic Oracle by Manuel Rodriguez Sr.; and Ku III by Fernando Zóbel — are featured in NGS’s first-ever solo exhibition dedicated to transcontinental abstract artist Fernando Zóbel (1924–1984).

Born in the Philippines to a prominent Spanish family, Zóbel was an avid traveler, a cosmopolitan thinker and writer, and a pioneering collector who established two modern art museums in the Philippines and Spain. His lifelong, wide-ranging interests shaped his expressionist and abstract works in drawing, printmaking, painting, and photography.

He held his first solo exhibition at the Philippine Art Gallery in 1952, invigorating the postwar art scene in the country. In 1960, Zóbel left the family business in the Philippines to fully devote himself to artistic pursuits.

The inaugural showcase of his works in Singapore, the exhibition Fernando Zóbel: Order is Essential, introduces this legendary visual artist to new audiences, offering insights into his multifaceted contributions as an artist, patron, collector, and scholar. Featuring over 200 pieces — including paintings, drawings, prints, photographs, and archival materials — the exhibition highlights Zóbel’s role in bridging cultural contexts and enriching global dialogues on modern art.

Zóbel’s Ku III, part of his renowned Ku series, exemplifies his deeply personal and abstract style, marked by delicate color palettes and expressive, nuanced brushwork. This piece underscores the artist’s distinctive contribution to abstract expressionism.

According to the CCP Encyclopedia of Philippine Art, David Medalla’s Portrait of Fernando Zóbel marks an early phase in the artist’s exploration of unconventional expression. The work emphasizes the flatness of the canvas through simple, linear forms inspired by children’s drawings and so-called “primitive” art. It also reflects a strong Dadaist influence and aligns with the raw aesthetic of Art Brut, blending satire and playfulness – characteristics that later became hallmarks of Medalla’s practice.

In the portrait, the usually refined and esteemed business tycoon Zóbel is reimagined through a whimsical lens. Using mixed media on black paper, Medalla transforms him into a playful figure with an exaggerated grin, subverting the formality typically associated with portraiture.

The piece was part of Medalla’s debut solo exhibition, which featured large-scale paintings incorporating unconventional materials such as sand, seashells, and gravel with oil paint. This portrait is one of three paintings depicting Zóbel in the CCP 21AM Collection; the others are also titled Portrait of Fernando Zobel and made in 1956.

In Fernando Zóbel Lecturing on Art and a Student Listening II, Medalla uses pen and ink on paper to depict Zobel, who was widely known for his Saeta series.

Reflecting the development of Philippine modern art, Manuel Rodriguez Sr. presents a collograph with orange linear strokes dominated by a deep green background in his work, Calligraphic Oracle.

Painting No.1 by National Artist Jose Joya depicts his abstract expressionist influence through bold images of irregular geometric shapes with overlapping patterns. This style was influenced by his travels and studies in Spain in Europe.

Named after Zóbel’s famous remark that guided his artistic practice, the exhibition sheds light on a lesser-known aspect of his abstraction – a meticulous and controlled creative process involving multiple iterations before finalizing each work.

Fernando Zóbel: Order is Essential follows the exhibit Zóbel: The Future of the Past, which opened at Museo Nacional del Prado (2022) in Spain and was later restaged at the Ayala Museum (2024) in the Philippines. Expanding on key narratives, NGS’s distinct and refreshed iteration introduces exclusive works and offers a unique perspective on Zóbel’s artistic evolution and transcontinental practice.

Spanning two gallery spaces, the exhibition is organized into five sections: “Half of This Haunted Monk’s Life,” “With Every Single Refinement,” “Thin Lines Against a Field of Colour,” “Movement That Includes Its Own Contradiction,” and “The Light of the Painting.”

Each section traces a phase in Zóbel’s artistic development – from his early years to his formative period in New England, his reconnection with his Filipino roots, his journey into abstraction and monochrome, and finally, his fascination with motion and the passage of time in his later years.

The exhibit opened on May 9 and will run until November 30, 2025, at the Wu Guanzhong Gallery and Level 4 Gallery at National Gallery Singapore.

A Musical for the Heart and Soul: HAPHOW Puts Filipino Values in the Spotlight

The word HAPHOW is an acronym for six core values: Humility, Acceptance, Patience, Honesty, Open-Mindedness, and Willingness. These values are woven into a magical story set in the lush forest of Kalinaw, where a cast of colorful insect characters embark on personal journeys of growth, friendship, and courage. Along the way, they learn not just how to live with each other but how to live with purpose.

Leading the cast is acclaimed Filipino singer and stage actor Gerald Santos, portraying HAPHOW himself, a character symbolic of change, truth, and transformation. “We built HAPHOW to reflect the emotional and moral struggles, especially the youth are facing today,” says Ms. MJ Aspacio, the show’s director, playwright, and composer. “The story is simple, but the message runs deep. We want audiences to walk out not only entertained, but inspired to live with more kindness, patience, and love for nature and one another.”

At its core, HAPHOW is a celebration of the Filipino spirit: resilient, warm, and values-driven. It highlights not only the importance of character-building, but also the role of the arts in shaping the next generation.

The production is mounted by CityDanse Academy (CDA) Corp., with a mission to make quality, value-based performing arts accessible to families, schools, and communities.

With future plans for a national tour and school-based performances, HAPHOW aims to become a staple for values education and Filipino cultural pride.

PH’s advanced emergency response system will reinforce publicconfidence, attract investments and tourism, says tech expert

The Philippines is poised to be a model of disaster resilience and smarter governance in Southeast Asia where citizens will have peace of mind knowing that help is just a message or call away, regardless of their location.

This is what Don Ferguson, co-founder of the next generation advanced 911 emergencyresponse technology currently being used in the United States and Europe, and CEO of NGA 911 LLC based in the US, said after noting that a growing number of local government units (LGUs) in the Philippines have already put up their own cutting-edge public safety systems.

Heeding the call of the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) for a unified, nationwide 911 emergency response system that utilizes modern technology, Morong, Rizal, Alaminos City in Pangasinan, Cebu City, Cagayan de Oro City, Mambajao in Camiguin Island, Bustos, Bulacan and Tagbilaran City, Bohol became the
First LGUs to invest in the state-of-the-art emergency response command centers. Command centers in these areas now use advanced technologies like IP-based networks and multimedia capabilities that have improved emergency response efficiency and effectiveness, so distress calls can be answered and attended to on-site in just 3 to 5 minutes. The new technology also enables more robust and flexible communication between emergency callers and dispatch centers and allows transmission of multimedia data like text, photos and video. Prank callers can be
identified and eliminated from the conversation.

Ferguson said the advanced technology now used by the local command centers will enable the LGUs to operate with greater coordination, accountability and data-driven decision-making.

This is due to the advanced technology’s precise geolocation and real-time data. Citizens will also be able to send texts, photos, and videos that will give responders critical information before they arrive on the scene. LGUs are able to coordinate more effectively, especially during large-scale disasters where speed and clarity are essential.
The system enhances public trust by making emergency assistance more accessible and reliable, while also improving frontliner safety by providing better situational awareness, Ferguson added.

The future will be bright, announced Ferguson. “With a modern infrastructure in place,
the country will attract more investment and tourism. Ultimately, the Philippines will be
recognized not just for its beauty and culture, but for its leadership in innovation and
commitment to saving lives.”
The unified emergency system will reinforce public confidence because it will signal that
safety and risk management are top priorities, Ferguson shared. “Tourists are more likely to visit regions with dependable emergency services, which boosts local economic growth. Centralized data enables better governance through increased transparency, accountability, and performance monitoring. This transformation also creates jobs and drives innovation in tech and public safety sectors. Overall, it strengthens and enhances the Philippines’ global reputation as a resilient and well-managed nation.”

GOMO goes the distance with Guinness World Records holder’s run across Luzon

This summer, GOMO is lacing up for something big. In true UNSTPPBL spirit, the game-changing digital telco brand is partnering with Guinness World Records holder and women’s empowerment advocate Natalie Dau for Project 1000, a multi-day ultra run across Luzon that champions fitness, purpose, and breaking limits for a cause.

GOMO1.jpg

From April 21 to May 2, Natalie has been blazing through the Philippine roads on foot to raise funds for her selected charities, and GOMO is on the same track. As the official telco partner, GOMO is inviting the GOMO Fam to run with purpose by donating their GBs via ‘Mo Creds on the GOMO PH app. GOMO customers can swap their No Expiry Data for donations in these amounts: 1GB for a P10 donation, 4GB for P50, 8GB for P100, and 15GB for P200. These donations go directly to support charities like Save the Children Girls Impact Fund, Alon and Araw Club, and scholarships for local schools.

On top of that, GOMO is also providing No Expiry Data SIMs and GOMO Fiber connection to help her partner communities enjoy the convenience of mobile with the power of fiber-fast speed connectivity, another industry first from the digital telco brand as it introduced a true digital fixed-mobile convergence product in the country.

Natalie & Project 1000 represent exactly what being UNSTPPBL means: breaking limits and moving with purpose. Through this initiative, we get to help bridge the digital gap for these communities so they can unlock the power to thrive—whether in school, in business, or at home,” said Dom Brucal, Head of GOMO PH.

On May 2, Natalie completes her mission with a special community run from Jollibee Sta. Cruz in Guiguinto, Bulacan to Jollibee Bonifacio Global City (BGC). Local runners, fitness advocates, and the GOMO Fam are invited to join her final stretch.

“Running has always been a tool for physical, mental, and emotional transformation. Being able to do what I love while raising awareness and empowering others, especially women, is what drives me. GOMO’s support has been incredible, and I’m honored to have them behind Project 1000,” shared Natalie.

How SM Prime’s environmental leadership and innovation are continuously powering a more sustainable future for all

For SM Prime, sustainability is not merely a statement, but a strategic imperative that is deeply embedded in the way the company operates. This is demonstrated in concrete outcomes that reflect the organization’s innovation and leadership when it comes to its environmental efforts, continuously delivering measurable progress in advancing sustainability across its developments.

Anchored in its Net Zero 2040 goals, SM continues to strengthen its commitment to environmental sustainability through the scaled deployment of renewable energy solutions in its properties, integrating solar energy to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions and reduce reliance on grid-supplied fossil fuels, while aligning its operations with global climate goals.

As of early 2025, a total of 47 SM Supermalls nationwide are now outfitted with solar photovoltaic (PV) systems, generating a combined peak capacity of 63 Megawatts. These systems comprise 118,313 solar panels installed across mall rooftops, contributing to a measurable reduction in carbon emissions and representing a significant benchmark in the advancement of renewable energy adoption within the Philippine commercial real estate sector.

With the MOA Sky walkway, SM Mall of Asia harnesses solar energy to deliver a combined 3MW of power —enough to run 1,000 escalators a day or power 1,800 homes for a month.

SM Mall of Asia’s MOA Sky showcases a multi-use rooftop with a solar-covered walkway, contributing to their significant renewable energy capacity.

SM Mall of Asia (MOA), one of the company’s flagship developments, exemplifies this commitment through its multi-use rooftop, MOA Sky. Among its features is a solar-covered walkway integrating 555 PV panels, contributing an additional 0.3-Megawatt peak capacity while offering shade to pedestrians. With a total of 11,355 panels now installed, SM MOA’s cumulative solar PV system delivers 3 Megawatts of peak power—enough to operate approximately 1,000 escalators for a day or provide electricity to 1,800 average households for a month.

SM’s renewable energy projects were prominently featured during the 2025 Energy Efficiency Day conference, where SM Engineering, Design, and Development Corporation Vice President Engr. Teodoro Bautista presented the group’s performance and ongoing efforts in operational energy efficiency. The initiative was also a key factor in SM MOA’s recognition as the recipient of the first Sustainable Energy Award for a Private Institution, organized by the Department of Energy, affirming the commercial viability and environmental value of large-scale solar adoption.

Solar-powered parasols at SM City Bicutan’s Sky Garden provide 4–5 hours of nighttime lighting after just 3 hours of daytime charging.

Integrating sustainability, SM City Bicutan offers solar-powered parasols with nighttime illumination in its Sky Garden.

Meanwhile, another SM mall, SM City Bicutan, recently introduced solar-powered parasols within its Sky Garden. These structures, designed with both function and form in mind, utilize solar energy to provide 4 to 5 hours of nighttime lighting after a 3-hour daytime charge. Beyond their energy efficiency, these installations reinforce the importance of integrating environmental considerations into the customer experience.

“Through these initiatives, we are able to significantly reduce our carbon footprint and create long-term operational savings for our malls, while simultaneously introducing innovative solutions towards a greener and brighter future for everyone,” said SM Supermalls President Steven Tan.

SM Prime’s transition to renewable energy is a key component of its climate action strategy under the Net Zero 2040 roadmap. Through systematic decarbonization across its portfolio, the company continues to play a leading role in supporting national and global climate targets while delivering measurable sustainability outcomes that leave a lasting positive impact on the environment.

Taste Korea’s Finest: Paldo’s Casual Fine Dining Arrives at SM Podium

Manila just got a taste of royalty with the arrival of Paldo, the first Korean fine dining restaurant in the Philippines, now open at SM Podium. Known for its curated mix of premium dining and experimental concepts, SM Podium is the perfect setting for Paldo’s fresh yet traditional take on Korean cuisine. Owned and brought to life by Ryan Bang, the restaurant delivers a dining experience that’s both casual and refined.

Paldo, which means “eight provinces,” takes its patrons on a journey across South Korea through dishes that represent the country’s rich and diverse food culture. From bold southern flavors to delicate northern specialties, the restaurant brings the heart of Korea to Manila.

Experience the perfect mix of tradition and culinary creativity, where every dish celebrates the finest of Korean cuisine by bringing out its rich flavors and textures.

One of Paldo’s must-tries is Surasang, also known as the “King’s Meal”—a traditional full-course spread once served to royals and aristocrats during the Joseon dynasty. It features an impressive variety of mains and sides, including Doenjang Jjigae (soybean stew), Dakgalbi (spicy stir-fried chicken), Braised Back Ribs, Royal Modeum Jeon (Korean-style savory pancakes), and Japchae (stir-fried glass noodles).

For something more curated, try Chef Sam Kim’s Signature Set—a thoughtfully selected lineup of traditional Korean dishes elevated with modern flair. The set includes Briquettes Bulgogi, marinated pork grilled over charcoal, and Doenjang Jjigae, a rich soybean stew with snails, tofu, mushrooms, and vegetables.

Both sets are served with a variety of carefully prepared side dishes, each chosen to round out the meal and bring out the essence of Korean flavors.

Paldo also offers a range of drinks that perfectly suit the bold flavors of each meal, making every bite even more satisfying.

7 Ways SM Supermalls is Making Earth Day, Every Day

SM Supermalls continues to champion the mindset that sustainability isn’t just a one-day commitment—it’s a lifestyle. In celebration of Earth Day 2025, SM invites everyone to be part of simple, everyday actions that make a big difference for the planet. Through innovative programs, eco-friendly infrastructure, and community engagement, SM’s malls have become leading platforms for greener living.

“Our malls are more than shopping destinations—they’re spaces where people and the planet can thrive together,” said Engr. Liza Silerio, Vice President for Corporate Compliance and Program Director of SM Cares for Environment. “Through programs that are easy to join, SM makes it possible for every visitor to take part in a more sustainable future.”

Here are 7 sustainable ways SM is turning its pledge into everyday impact—and how you can take part:

1. Plug in Your EV—for Free

With 123 EV charging stations across 69 malls, SM has disbursed over 14,500 kWh of clean electricity to electric vehicle users, with 50 more chargers planned in 2025. It’s free, easy to access, and part of SM’s commitment to low-emission mobility.

An electric vehicle charges at SM North EDSA’s Electric Vehicle Charging Station—one of 123 across 69 SM Supermalls nationwide.

2. Walk into Solar-Powered Spaces

SM currently operates 47 malls and properties with solar installations, generating 27.6 GWh of clean energy in 2024 alone—the equivalent of removing over 4,100 cars off the road. With a goal of 100MWp rooftop solar capacity by 2027, more solar rollouts are planned for 2025.

SM City Tanza powers up with 2,286 solar panels, generating a peak capacity of 1,257.30 kW—part of SM Supermalls’ commitment to clean and sustainable energy.

3. Experience Greener Malls with Natural Lighting

From Sky Gardens and skylights that allow natural light to brighten spaces and reduce electricity use, to LED lighting and motion sensor escalators, every corner of the mall is designed with energy efficiency in mind. SM also contributes 110 MW of capacity to the DOE’s Interruptible Load Program.

Natural light streams through the skylights of SM Supermalls, helping reduce electricity consumption while creating a bright, welcoming space.

4. Support a Waste-Free Future

Launched in 2023, SM’s #SMWasteFreeFuture campaign enforces proper waste segregation across all mall tenants through RDC (Recyclable, Disposable, Compostable) bin systems. Internally, SM is also building a culture of sustainability among employees, proving that change starts from within.

SM employees lead by example as they properly segregate waste using the RDC (Recyclable, Disposable, Compostable) bin system—showing that building a #SMWasteFreeFuture starts from within.

5. Turn Trash into Treasure at Trash-to-Cash

Held every first Friday and Saturday of the month, this recycling market has helped exchange over 1 million kilograms of recyclables annually across SM malls nationwide. Visitors can bring paper, plastic, metal, or even old appliances—and exchange them for cash.

Students weighs recyclables during SM Cares’ Trash to Cash, showing that small actions can lead to a greener future.

6. Recycle Smarter with Plastic and E-Waste Collection

Drop off used plastics at 15 participating SM malls and e-waste bins at Cyberzone areas nationwide. So far, these programs have diverted 63,874 kg of plastics and over 11,000 kg of e-waste from landfills—thanks to partnerships with Friends of Hope and Smart/PLDT.

Mall customers drop off used plastic wastes at SM’s Plastic Collection Program—proving that small actions can lead to a cleaner, greener future for all.Unused and damaged electronic items are being let go through SM’s E-Waste Collection located at Cyberzone.

7. Join Coastal Cleanups that Protect Our Seas

In 2024, over 27,000 volunteers across 15 SM malls helped collect more than 157,000 kg of trash from coastlines and waterways. SM also initiates weekly and quarterly coastal cleanups, proving that when communities work together, the ripple effect reaches far and wide.

SM Bataan employee volunteers during the International Coastal Cleanup, working together to help protect our oceans.

From recycling programs to coastal cleanups, solar panels to EV charging stations, every small act adds up. And at SM, Earth Day isn’t just April 22—it’s every day.
