CDA Empowers Cooperatives Through SM Supermalls’ Weekend Market

Cooperative Development Authority (CDA) and SM Supermalls have officially sealed a strategic partnership through a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) signing held on Monday, July 1, 2025, at the SM Supermalls Headquarters in Pasay City. The agreement marks the beginning of a joint effort to empower Filipino cooperatives by giving them access to high-foot-traffic mall spaces through the SM Weekend Market — a platform dedicated to showcasing local products, homegrown talent, and Filipino entrepreneurship.

L-R: Royston A. Cabunag, Assistant Vice President and Lead for MSME and Job Fairs, Engr. Junias M. Eusebio, Vice President for Mall Operations of SM Supermalls formalized partnership through a MOA signing with CDA Chairperson Usec. Alexander B. Raquepo and CDA Administrator Asec. Santiago S. Lim, that aims to empower Filipino cooperatives through the SM Weekend Market initiative.

The MOA was signed by Undersecretary Alexander B. Raquepo, CDA Chairperson, and Engr. Junias M. Eusebio, Vice President for Mall Operations of SM Supermalls, in the presence of key officials from both institutions. “This is a historic partnership between the private and public sectors,” said Usec. Raquepo during his remarks. “We take great pride in this collaboration with SM Supermalls, which represents a powerful step forward in uplifting our micro, small and medium cooperative entrepreneurs. This model partnership will not only provide access to markets, but help elevate the economic well-being of our communities.”City Calamba.

Local farmers showcase and sell their fresh harvest to shoppers at the SM Weekend Market, a platform by SM Supermalls that connects producers directly to consumers in high-traffic mall locations.

Under the agreement, CDA will endorse eligible cooperatives across the country to participate in the SM Weekend Market. In turn, SM Supermalls will make space available in key mall locations for a minimal fee—intended only to help cover maintenance costs. “The SM Weekend Market was born out of a simple but powerful idea — to give farmers and local producers, especially those in cooperatives, the chance to bring their goods closer to the people, in places they wouldn’t normally have access to,” said Engr. Junias M. Eusebio, Vice President for Mall Operations at SM Supermalls. “With CDA as our partner, we are excited to open more doors and more mall spaces to co-ops across the country. This partnership will allow more communities to thrive, more stories to be told, and more Filipino-made products to be celebrated.”

The event marks the start of a nationwide collaboration between CDA and SM Supermalls, with more updates and market rollouts expected in the coming months.

SM Supermalls elevates urban air quality

There’s nothing quite like strolling through a mall with breathtaking views, expansive arcades, and lush greenery. At SM Supermalls, shopping isn’t just about transactions—it’s about enjoying spaces designed for comfort, sustainability, and a healthier environment. More than ever, SM’s commitment to green infrastructure is shaping urban air quality while creating a more livable city for everyone.

Designing for people and the planet

SM Supermalls prioritizes people-centric design, creating welcoming spaces that balance nature with modern convenience. The SM Mall of Asia’s arcades and the MOA Sky, for example, offer open, breezy walkways, encouraging leisurely strolls and even outdoor dining and entertainment. Meanwhile, SM Aura and SM North EDSA’s Sky Garden—the first in an SM mall—integrates lush vegetation and water features to reduce indoor heat, improve air quality, and create cooling effects in dense urban areas.

SM North EDSA houses the first Sky Garden in an SM mall, highlighting endemic plants and water features that bring nature onto a rooftop.

The SM MOA Sky showcases greenery and open-air spaces that promote cleaner, cooler urban living.

Championing bike-friendly cities

Beyond providing open spaces, SM Supermalls is leading bike-friendly initiatives, with over 5,000 bike parking spaces across its properties. Studies show that replacing short car trips with biking can cut carbon emissions by up to 90%, significantly reducing air pollution and its long-term impact on climate change.

Bikers enjoy the convenience of secure parking as SM Supermalls champions eco-friendly transport solutions.

Greening malls with native flora

Additionally, select SM malls feature endemic plant species that enhance air quality and support local biodiversity, filtering pollutants while creating a natural habitat for urban wildlife. These green spaces are designed not just for aesthetics but to actively contribute to a healthier environment.

Making public transport more convenient

To make sustainable transport more accessible, SM Supermalls operates transport terminals that support public transportation, providing seamless connections to buses, jeepneys, and other modes of transit. These terminals encourage commuters to opt for public transport, which can significantly reduce individual carbon footprints and traffic congestion, contributing to cleaner air and more efficient urban mobility.

Powering the shift to EVs

Recognizing the need for cleaner transportation, SM Supermalls has also installed Electric Vehicle Charging Stations (EVCS) in 69 malls nationwide. By providing essential infrastructure for electric vehicles, SM is helping to lower carbon emissions and reduce reliance on fossil fuels—a crucial step in improving urban air quality. Studies indicate that EVs produce up to 60% less greenhouse gas emissions compared to traditional gas-powered vehicles, making them a key solution for reducing pollution in crowded city centers.

Monitoring air, empowering communities

SM’s commitment to sustainability extends to air quality monitoring, ensuring that urban pollution levels are tracked and addressed. Under SM Prime Holdings, the company partnered with Quezon City to establish an air quality monitoring system that records environmental data and provides updates through a publicly accessible website. This initiative allows communities to stay informed while encouraging long-term strategies for a cleaner, healthier urban space.

SM Supermalls monitors air quality in real time, empowering communities with data for cleaner, healthier cities.

A greener future for urban living

From green roofs and bike-friendly amenities to EVCS and air quality monitoring, SM Supermalls is redefining retail spaces with a deeper environmental purpose. Every visit to an SM mall contributes to a better urban future, where sustainability and innovation go hand in hand.

40 years of building better communities

Celebrating 40 years of serving communities, SM Supermalls continues to lead as a shopping and lifestyle destination in the Philippines. True to its legacy, SM remains at the forefront of environmental sustainability through pioneering waste, water and energy innovations as well as disaster resilience initiatives.

Strengthening disaster preparedness: SM makes the Incident Command System possible

SM Supermalls conducts Incident Command System workshops to strengthen emergency response through structure, coordination, and accountability.

In a country like the Philippines, where typhoons, earthquakes, and other natural calamities are part of the norm, resilience is not just a necessity but a way of life. Ranked consistently high in the World Risk Index due to its location along the Pacific Ring of Fire and the typhoon belt, the nation faces challenges that demand coordinated, forward-thinking approaches to disaster preparedness and response.

Among those leading the way is SM Supermalls, whose commitment to resilience continues to evolve through investments in systems that safeguard not only business continuity but, more importantly, the communities they serve.

Disaster resilience in the private sector has become increasingly crucial. Corporations have the capacity to create ripple effects both in terms of operational continuity and their influence on surrounding communities. For SM, a sustained and risk-informed approach to resilience ensures that when emergencies strike, response is swift, coordinated, and grounded in tested protocols.

A key initiative in this approach is the company’s very own rollout of the Incident Command System (ICS). Designed to provide a standardized structure for managing emergency response, the ICS originated in the United States and is widely recognized as an on-scene, all-hazard incident management concept. Through its unified hierarchy and clearly defined roles, the ICS ensures that different responders—from government agencies to private security teams—can act in sync. This leads to more efficient resource management, better communication, and a higher degree of accountability during high-pressure situations.

As part of the initiative, SM regularly implements emergency preparedness drills across its network of malls and consistently participates in nationwide efforts for disaster preparedness, such as the annual fire and earthquake drills led by the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP). These efforts are complemented by support for the quarterly Nationwide Simultaneous Earthquake Drills led by the Office of Civil Defense (OCD) and the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC). These exercises include both employees and tenants, creating a culture of readiness that extends beyond corporate boundaries.

In addition, 79 SM Supermalls have been certified under the Business Continuity Management Systems—a reflection of the company’s structured and systematized approach to disaster risk reduction and recovery. This level of certification not only reflects internal diligence but also sets a benchmark for the broader business sector.

SM also has a dedicated resilience center, which operates as a centralized communications hub during large-scale disruptions. This facility coordinates with all SM malls to ensure rapid information flow and streamlined decision-making in the event of a national emergency.

SM’s collaborative approach to disaster resilience was also demonstrated during the 2024 Asia- Pacific Ministerial Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction in Manila. On the last day of the conference, SM City Clark became the focal point of an ICS demonstration attended by the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Resilience and foreign delegates.

The event showcased a unified response involving mall management, the Clark and Angeles municipalities, the BFP, OCD Region 3, and NDRRMC. Together, they enacted coordinated procedures designed to enhance public safety, offering an up-close look at how integrated disaster response works in a real-world environment.

In preparation for the site visit, SM Supermalls partnered with ARISE Philippines, the Private Sector Alliance for Resilient Societies, to conduct an ICS workshop alongside the OCD. This training brought together heads of operations, human resources, security, and Information Technology from SM City Clark and nearby locators such as Park Inn Hotel. Facilitated by experts from the BFP and the Philippine Army, the workshop provided hands-on training in ICS protocol, further reinforcing the company’s commitment to capacity-building at the local level.

Participants of the Incident Command System workshop learn the chain of command and roles essential for managing emergencies.

The Incident Command System is showcased in an emergency simulation at SM City Clark during the Asia-Pacific Ministerial Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction.

Public and private sector teams implement the Incident Command System as the Bureau of Fire Protection showcases high-angle rescue at SM City Clark.

SM’s vision for resilience is expansive and continuous. Following the success of the Clark initiative, the company is now preparing to roll out the next phase of ICS workshops, beginning with SM Mall of Asia and expanding to regional malls across the country. This nationwide implementation reflects a long-term strategy that prioritizes safety, community cohesion, and operational readiness.

“By investing in frameworks like the ICS, SM Supermalls demonstrates that resilience is not a reactive measure but an ongoing commitment,” said SM Supermalls Vice President Engr. Liza Silerio. “In a landscape defined by environmental vulnerability, this commitment provides not only peace of mind but a tangible sense of preparedness for employees, tenants, and the public at large.”

Through proactive strategies and sustained partnerships with government and civil society, SM is building more than safe spaces. It is also cultivating a culture of resilience that empowers people and protects communities in the face of any uncertainty, reiterating its commitment to promoting a more disaster-ready Philippines.

SM Supermalls empowers MSMEs’ future through inclusive resilience

Micro, small, and medium enterprise (MSME) tenants and Department of Trade and Industry (DTI)-supported entrepreneurs gear up for resilience through SM Supermalls’ nationwide Business Continuity Plan workshops.

SM Supermalls champions resilience as a shared responsibility, empowering communities and micro, small, and medium enterprise (MSME) tenants nationwide.

For SM Supermalls, resilience remains an essential pillar in its pursuit of sustainability. Without safe, secure, and prepared communities, the vision of sustainable development becomes difficult to achieve. This is why the company believes that promoting resilience is not only a matter of operational readiness but a responsibility to the communities and businesses that form the backbone of the economy.

At the heart of this commitment are micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs). These businesses are often the most vulnerable to disruptions brought about by natural and man-made hazards. Yet, they represent a critical force in the national economy—generating jobs, driving local commerce, and sustaining livelihoods. Recognizing their importance, SM Supermalls has made it a priority to help cultivate an MSME sector that is resilient.

Across its network, close to 70 percent of SM Supermalls’ tenants are currently MSMEs. These businesses operate under unique lessee contracts that acknowledge their specific needs and challenges. To support them, SM not only provides space but also promotes an environment that values preparedness and long-term continuity.

AI-generated content may be incorrect.

Beyond providing retail spaces, SM Supermalls promotes micro, small, and medium enterprise (MSME) resilience through emergency drills and dedicated Business Continuity Planning (BCP) initiatives.

SM Supermalls’ most notable resilience initiative for its MSME tenants is a dedicated Business Continuity Planning (BCP) program launched in 2024. This capacity-building initiative enables businesses to develop tailored Business Continuity Plans and implement adaptive measures to reduce the impact of disruptions.

SM’s tenants are each provided with free access to 5GB of remote digital storage where they can securely store critical business documents such as their BCPs, permits, registrations, and insurance policies, among others. In the event of a disaster, access to these documents becomes seamless, allowing faster processing of insurance claims and a quicker return to operations.

To further scale its impact, SM Supermalls established a public-private partnership with the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), formalized through a Memorandum of Agreement in 2024. Together with ARISE Philippines, a United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR)-affiliated private sector alliance for disaster resilience, the partnership aims to ensure that 6,000 MSMEs have robust BCPs by the end of 2027.

Business continuity subject matter experts guide micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in crafting their own Business Continuity Plans (BCPs) for their company.

The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) – Bureau of Small Medium Enterprise Development and SM Supermalls representatives join together in disaster risk resilience awareness and business continuity for micro, small and medium enterprises.

This collaboration is led by DTI Regional Operations Group Undersecretary Blesila Lantayona and Bureau of Small Medium Enterprise Development (BSMED) Director Emma Asusano, alongside SM Supermalls’ Corporate Resilience Department. The shared goal is clear: to safeguard MSMEs nationwide through proactive preparedness.

One key feature of the initiative is the SM-DTI Calamity Recovery (CARE) Booth, activated during times of calamity. Located in malls with communities impacted by disasters, the booth serves as an accessible touchpoint for MSMEs needing post-disaster support—providing a practical and timely response mechanism that bridges the gap between public resources and private needs.

Additionally, SM Supermalls regularly hosts scheduled BCP workshops for MSMEs in collaboration with DTI. These workshops are conducted in centralized SM locations across various regions and are open to both SM tenants and DTI-assisted MSMEs. During these sessions, business owners are introduced to the various risks posed by different types of disasters and are guided step-by-step in developing their own BCPs. These plans are tailored to the unique nature and geographical location of their operations, and the sessions extend to the BCP testing and validation phase to ensure practical application and effectiveness.

The participants are given one month to finalize their BCPs, which must be approved by their business management and submitted to DTI. Since the program’s launch in September 2024, over 1,500 MSMEs have already undergone training, with more scheduled in the months ahead.

“Resilience is not built overnight, and requires education, commitment, and collaboration across different sectors. Knowing this, SM Supermalls continues to invest in long-term resilience not just for its business, but for the broader ecosystem of MSMEs it supports,” said SM Supermalls President Steven Tan. “In doing so, we are reinforcing the fundamental truth that sustainable progress is only possible when communities and businesses are prepared to face the challenges of tomorrow.”

PPO champions Filipino artistry with heartfelt symphonies in recent UK Tour

The Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra (PPO), the premier orchestra of the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP), successfully championed the brilliance of Filipino talent to international audiences on its recent concert tour to the United Kingdom (UK).

“It was a hectic schedule for the PPO with nine concerts in 11 days, but the orchestra was up to the challenge. They were inspired, and their performances showed it,” said CCP President Kaye C. Tinga.

The PPO delivered exceptional performances night after night, feeding its audiences with heartfelt symphonies. Music critic Garry Fraser from the Perth Festival of the Arts described the tour as an exhibition of “skill and stamina,” exceptionally guided by its music director and principal conductor, Maestro Grzegorz Nowak.

Fraser continued: “They are as good as any you’ll hear and excellent in every single department, as fresh and engaging in the last bar of the Beethoven as they were in the first bar of the Bizet. The PPO and [its] conductor, Grzegorz Nowak, believe in value for money.”

Maestro Nowak leads the PPO to greater heights with UK Tour

Nearly three years have passed since Maestro Grzegorz Nowak was appointed conductor of the PPO, following an extensive search in 2022. He succeeded the esteemed Maestro Yoshikazu Fukumura and has since guided the nation’s premier orchestra to unprecedented artistic heights. With the successful conclusion of the UK Concert Tour, the maestro continues to shape the PPO’s legacy with unwavering vision attuned to musical excellence.

Critics David Gray and Paul Gray wrote in their review: “Conductor Grzegorz Nowak captured the individual flavour of each of the national dances. We were served up a stately Czardas and a friskily cheeky Neapolitan Dance.”

The tender lyricism of PPO’s concertmaster and artist-in-residence

Together with Maestro Nowak, PPO’s very own artist-in-residence and guest concertmaster Diomedes Saraza Jr. and top-tier guest soloists cellist Wen-Sinn Yang and pianist Mark Bebbington displayed profound musicality in the tour.

Saraza Jr. graced the UK Tour with poised clarity and lyricism. At the age of 12, he won first place in the violin category at the National Music Competitions for Young Artists (NAMCYA) in 2002. He is the first Filipino violin soloist to perform in Carnegie Hall.

“Diomedes Saraza Jr., with flawless intonation, expressive vibrato, and the sweetest tone, gave a rhapsodic and captivating account of the piece [Bizet’s Carmen],” said Donal Hurley in Edinburgh Music Review.

Saraza’s monumental nine-day concert tour with the PPO might have ended, but his encore of the Philippine folk song Leron, Leron Sinta lives on in the audience’s hearts. Fraser described the interpretation as a “blistering display of virtuosic dynamism and technical adeptness”.

Stylish interpretations of a cellist and a pianist

With heartfelt sensitivity, cellist Yang and pianist Mark Bebbington conversed with the PPO through virtuosic elements. Yang played Tchaikovsky’s Rococo Variation with an “enjoyment passed over to the audience in no small measure,” according to Fraser. He added, “It’s easy to run out of superlatives, such was his [Yang] fantastic display of skill, technique, and dazzling fingerboard gymnastics.”

Yang rose to popularity after winning first prize at the Geneva International Music Competition in 1991. He later became a regular guest at the international music festivals in St. Moritz, Davos, Biel, Dresden, Weilberg, and at the Ludwigsburg Castle Festivals. Since 2004, Yang has been a Professor of Violoncello at the Academy of Music and Theater in Munich.

Meanwhile, Bebbington, a certified champion of British music, enchanted audiences with his interpretations of Delius’ Piano Concerto. Saraza labelled him as the tour’s “hidden gem” when the revered Maestro Nowak shone marvelously with the piece.

Bebbington had previously toured with the London Philharmonic, Philharmonia, and Royal Philharmonic orchestras, as well as the London Mozart Players, Orchestra of the Swan, and BBC Concert Orchestra.

The PPO’s rousing success in the UK

Made possible by IMG Artists, the PPO performed in nine different venues, which required varying technical precision. Despite standing on unfamiliar stages, the orchestra received the same brand of adoration for its unparalleled commitment to music.

Highlighting Filipino excellence while strengthening cultural ties between the Philippines and the UK, the PPO UK Tour commenced at the Bristol Beacon in England on May 13 and concluded at the Perth Festival of the Arts in Scotland on May 24. They also performed at London’s Cadogan Hall, Birmingham’s Symphony Hall, G Live in Guildford, the Theatre Royal in Norwich, Manchester’s Bridgewater Hall, Sheffield’s City Hall, and at St George’s Hall in Bradford.

“There were pockets of Filipinos in the audience, and they couldn’t be any prouder. It was very moving, we couldn’t feel any more gratified,” clamored CCP President Tinga.

In Cadogan Hall, the audience even had to be ushered out because the applause was lengthy. “The UK tour proved that Filipino musicians are truly world-class, and are on par with the very best orchestras in the world,” Tinga said proudly.

For Tinga, the PPO’s success in the UK aligns with the CCP’s mission of promoting artistry that innately resides within Filipinos. The warm reception from an audience mainly composed of locals is a clear display of music’s power to surpass cultural barriers.

Tinga is certain that the PPO UK Tour’s success will pave the way for the international recognition of Filipino talents. As for the nation’s prime orchestra, she announced that it is gearing up for another milestone: “We are preparing for an Asian tour in 2026.”

The PPO UK TOUR was presented by the CCP, in partnership with Okada Manila and IMG Artists, with special support from the Office of Senator Juan Miguel Zubiri. The event was also made successful thanks to the National Commission for Culture and the Arts and the Metropolitan Theater.

The CCP recognizes its major sponsors: Rustan Commercial Corporation, Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office, Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra Society Inc., and Emirates. PPO UK TOUR also wouldn’t be possible without the contributions of the Johann Strauss Society of the Philippines, Sapatero Manila, Rhett Eala, Tie Line, Event Styling by Neve, and Flowerstyle PH.

Globe and CANVAS launch year-long exhibit celebrating art, children’s rights, and online safety at the National Museum

The halls of the National Museum are coming to life with color, curiosity, and purpose, as Globe partners with the Center for Art, New Ventures and Sustainable Development (CANVAS) to open a unique year-long exhibit titled “Tumba-Tumba: A Retrospective.”

Celebrating CANVAS’ 20th year of promoting children’s literacy and Philippine art and culture, the exhibit features interactive installations, striking artworks, and powerful storytelling—all curated with young minds in focus. Designed to spark imagination and dialogue, the exhibit invites children to explore their rights, the power of creativity, and how to navigate an increasingly digital world.

“This partnership is about creating a space where learning and play come together, and where kids can better understand how to protect themselves online,” said Atty. Irish Salandanan-Almeida, Chief Privacy Officer at Globe. “Through art, we can engage children in ways that are both meaningful and memorable.”

Among the exhibit’s centerpieces is the award-winning Safe Space: A Kid’s Guide to Data Privacy, a book co-produced by Globe and CANVAS that helps children understand the value of personal information and how to stay safe in the digital world. Visitors can interact with materials inspired by the book, reinforcing lessons on online boundaries, digital footprints, and respectful internet behavior.

The exhibit is also a preview of CANVAS’ upcoming Tumba-Tumba Children’s Museum of Philippine Art, currently being built in Ibaan, Batangas. Just an hour and a half from Manila, the museum will be the first of its kind in the country—a space devoted to Filipino children, storytelling, and creativity.

“We’ve always believed that art can move, teach, and transform. ‘Tumba-Tumba’ is a celebration of that belief,” said Gigo Alampay, Executive Director of CANVAS. “Thanks to partners like Globe, we’re able to bring these stories to more children—and help them grow up informed, expressive, and empowered.”

Globe’s support for the exhibit is part of its broader commitment to safeguarding children’s rights online. Over the past three years, Globe has proactively blocked more than a million URLs linked to sexual abuse or exploitation of children (OSAEC) and recently extended protections to cover AI-generated and non-photographic content.

Through this exhibit, Globe continues to champion digital responsibility—reminding families that online safety starts with awareness, and that even the simplest tools, like a children’s book or a piece of art, can make a lasting difference.

The “Tumba-Tumba” exhibit opens to the public on June 13, 2025, and will run at the National Museum for an entire year.
