SM Prime: Living in Tomorrow’s Water-Resilient Future

Manila, Philippines — At SM Prime Holdings, Inc. (SM Prime), water stewardship has come a long way since its early initiatives. As part of its environmental sustainability strategy, the programmatic Water for Tomorrow campaign looks beyond water recycling and efficient water management.

For SM Supermalls, this urgent call to action to protect and preserve a valuable resource makes any large-scale investment in water security a sound opportunity to do good for both people and planet.

SM Southmall in the late 90’s. Located in the water-challenged area of Las Pinas, the mall was the first to have a sewage treatment plant (STP) for water recycling. It opened to the public in 1995, followed by SM Bacoor in 1997, saving a significant volume of water otherwise used for flushing.

Amplified impact

With 89 malls nationwide, SM Supermalls’ high-impact yet practical water management systems and circularity practices build long-term capacity for future water disruptions and reflect the malls’ greater ecosystem.

A community solution. At the launch of SM City Baguio’s Rainwater Treatment Facility (RTF), innovation meets sustainability, setting a benchmark for water efficiency.

Having introduced sewage treatment plants nearly three decades ago, well before any compliance requirements, SM Supermalls also made significant investments in efficient low-flow fixtures and water-saving technologies to prevent unnecessary consumption at scale. In 2023, the first rainwater treatment facility by a mall opened in Baguio to convert rainwater into another potable resource, alleviating pressure on the local water grid.

At a cultural level, SM Supermalls becomes a living sustainability classroom where mallgoers, employees, and tenant-partners are made aware of its water, waste, and energy programs. Partnerships with NGOs, government agencies, and civic groups also sustain water conversations through the mall’s broad reach and are crucial to the sustainability agenda.

SM Cares engages communities, mallgoers, and tenants in water conservation initiatives that inspire mindful consumption and collective action.

Embedding the message of water sustainability, SM Cares champions UN SDG6 – using every mall touchpoint and social media to create content on water conservation, access to safe water, sanitation, and hygiene for health and well-being

Water sustainability is a shared responsibility across all SM malls. SM Cares engages and promotes water conservation initiatives that inspire mindful consumption and collective action.

As a vital community hub, the malls promote the wider SM Green Movement campaign, empowering people to practice responsible water use.

The first mall to receive LEED Gold Certification in 2017, SM Aura’s wastewater treatment plant and smart water management technologies ensure responsible and efficient water use.

Building what matters, today

Water’s essential role supports human activity and economic growth.  As climate concerns accelerate and affect water supply, SM Prime’s unified stance on water stewardship prepares for challenges ahead.

SM Supermalls not only assists larger partner-tenants with compliance and the bottom line. It similarly inspires smaller businesses and other stakeholders that depend on mall operations to adopt innovative solutions.

“The scale of what we are doing today for water is already proof that we are reaping the benefits of the innovative vision of our leadership,” says Steven T. Tan, President of SM Supermalls.

“What makes our programs truly meaningful is how they bring people and purpose together. It creates a ripple effect of sustainability that reaches beyond our walls,” said Tan.  ###

Unified, nationwide E911 system will give Filipinos greater peace of mind

With the rollout of the Unified 911, the country now has a single reliable hotline for police, fire, medical, and disaster emergencies. This gives Filipinos faster and improved access to life-saving services. By dialing 911 from anywhere, calls can be traced in seconds and first responders dispatched within three to five minutes because the new system can pinpoint their exact location.

The Unified 911 is a joint initiative of the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG), the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP), PLDT Inc. (PLDT), through its corporate business arm PLDT Enterprise and ICT subsidiary ePLDT, NGCS Inc., and NGA 911 Philippines, the local arm of U.S.-based NGA 911 LLC. It introduces next generation emergency communications technology already proven in the United States and Europe.

The system comes with advanced features designed to strengthen public safety. It has GPS-based location tracking that allows faster and more precise dispatch of emergency teams. It uses internet protocol to transmit voice, text, and video between callers and responders, providing real-time data that enhances situational awareness and supports better decision-making. It integrates the Philippine National Police, BFP, and local government emergency response units into one centralized network, with more agencies and features to follow. It is also hosted on ePLDT’s Pilipinas Cloud and the Amazon Web Service platform to ensure reliability and resiliency.

For the joint project, NGA has brought to the Philippines an advanced emergency communications system that can provide faster and more accurate emergency responses to people in need. It is the same technology used in the United States and Europe that has proven to be a game-changer in emergency communications. The system leverages NGA 911’s next generation 911 technology to deliver the project’s critical functions and capabilities.

Don Ferguson, Co-Founder and CEO of NGA 911 LLC, said the system “will help the DILG save more lives and empower more communities now that all systems have been unified into one nationwide system. The technology is a true cloud-based NG 9-1-1 solution

operating on the Amazon Web Service (AWS) Cloud Platform and uses a robust and

resilient Internet Protocol (IP) backbone that has replaced the decades-old 911

infrastructure to turn emergency communication into Next Generation 911.

Launched on September 11 in line with President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s directive under Bagong Pilipinas, DILG Secretary Juanito Victor Remulla mentioned that the system shall integrate around 30 fragmented local hotlines into one universal number: 911.

Robert Llaguno, NGA 911 Philippines Country Manager, said, “We have been entrusted to build the 911 mission-critical systems and communication facilities that will help save lives, protect property, and unify our first responder communications. This partnership is aiming for nothing short of unparalleled service, and this is my commitment to my family and the Filipino people.”

SM Supermalls’ Bold New Era: All for You

From iconic destinations to evolved spaces, SM Supermalls is shaping malls that blend scale, innovation, and community for every Filipino.

SM Supermalls marks 40 years of retail leadership with a bold roadmap: to deliver one flagship mall every year from 2026 to 2030, transforming malls into future-ready spaces that anchor regional growth. Alongside these landmark projects, SM is investing over PHP150 billion in 16 major redevelopments and 12 new lifestyle malls, ensuring its entire portfolio evolves into greener, smarter, and more people-centered destinations by 2030.

SM Sta. Rosa (Yulo) in Nuvali coming 2026

The opening of SM North EDSA in 1985 forever changed how Filipinos shopped, dined, and connected. From that single vision grew a nationwide network of 88 malls, welcoming millions of visitors weekly and housing thousands of local and global brands. Today, SM celebrates this legacy as both a retail hub and a trusted partner, community builder, and symbol of continuity for generations.

A Legacy Anchored on Trust

“At SM, we’ve always believed that success is shared,” said Steven T. Tan, President of SM Supermalls. “From the very beginning, SM was built on trust and relationships. We only win when our partners win.”

This philosophy has guided SM through decades of growth and transformation, from opening the country’s first supermalls to building nationwide retail destinations. Every milestone has been anchored on collaboration with tenants, partners, and communities. That same spirit of shared success continues to shape SM’s New Era vision, ensuring that the malls of tomorrow remain trusted spaces where people come together.

Flagship Destinations that Redefine Retail

Over the next five years, SM will deliver landmark flagship malls that serve as ecosystems combining shopping, dining, culture, and community in destinations that anchor regional economies. Planned projects include SM Sta. Rosa (Yulo) in Nuvali (2026), Harrison Plaza in Manila (2027), SM Malolos in Bulacan (2028), Cavite (2029), and Pasay (2030). These projects reflect SM’s ability to raise the benchmark for Philippine retail while remaining deeply rooted in local communities.

Beyond flagships, SM is modernizing existing malls with open-air promenades, lifestyle zones, and sustainable features. These redevelopments will make every SM mall more vibrant, green, and people-centered.

All For You

This vision reflects more than just physical expansion. It highlights SM’s long-standing ability to adapt, modernize, and introduce new experiences that matter to Filipino families. SM is evolving its retail ecosystem to be tenant-led, offering dynamic formats, personalized leasing, and collaborative platforms. Sustainability is a cornerstone, with smarter designs, renewable energy, and eco-conscious developments.

“This New Era is not about adding more malls,” Tan said. “It is about creating destinations that matter, modernizing the malls people already love, and ensuring every Filipino has access to world-class malling. Our promise is simple. Everything we do is all for you.”

SM La Union

He added, “Our vision is clear. We are building the next generation of malls for the next generation of Filipinos.”

With its reach, partnerships, and track record, SM is positioned to lead the next phase of retail and community development in the Philippines.

40 Years of Partnership

The anniversary is being marked nationwide with over 4,000 exclusive partner-powered deals across all 88 malls, SM’s biggest shopping celebration yet. The milestone underscores SM’s unique position, a company that has grown hand in hand with its tenants while remaining the most loved retail channel, deeply woven into the daily lives of Filipino families.

“For four decades, you’ve been with us every step of the way, and for that, maraming salamat,” Tan said. “As we look ahead, we will keep evolving with you and for you. Because at SM, our success has always been shared.”

Rotary Club of Pasay Southeast’s Successful and Meaningful Presidential Handover and Induction Ceremonies

The Rotary Club of Pasay Southeast (RCPSE) recently held a memorable and impactful Presidential Turnover event that beautifully combined tradition, creativity, and community service. This significant occasion was marked not only by the formal handover of leadership but also by an art exhibit.

A Ceremony of Significance

The Presidential Turnover remains a cornerstone event for the RCPSE, symbolizing the continuity of dedication to Rotary’s mission of service above self. Outgoing Magical Irresistible President  (MIP) Melanie S. Guinto reflected on a year of remarkable achievements. “It has been an honor to serve alongside such passionate members. Together, we have strengthened our community and made meaningful impacts that will endure,” she said.

Incoming United Chosen President (UCP) Rynah F. Ventura expressed optimism for the future:  As we step into a new Rotary year, our theme is  UNITE FOR GOOD. This theme is not just a slogan — it’s a call to action.  It reminds me of the essence of Unity, as Helen Keller said,  “Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much. This year, I envision our club growing not just in numbers, but in impact. We have lined up projects in consideration of the Rotary’s seven areas of focus that will touch every human’s heart. “

Rotarian Reservists: A Flagship for Peace

Guided by global humanitarian efforts, Rotary International has seven Areas of Focus –  one of which is Peacebuilding and Conflict Prevention.  As Rotary promotes peace and conflict resolution through education, dialogue, and other community-building initiatives, the Rotary Club of Pasay Southeast launches its flagship project, Rotarian Reservist – curbing conflict, preserving peace, taking into consideration UCP Rynah’s involvement in the military service as a reservist. She said, “As a Philippine Air Force Reservist and the incoming President of the Rotary Club of Pasay Southeast for the Rotary Year 2025-2026, my end goal is to create a sustainable environment where individuals and communities, in uniform or not, can consistently co-exist peacefully and thrive. I desire to share the value of being a reservist and take part in promoting peace and resolving conflict.”

Art Exhibit as Fundraising Drive

Adding a unique and enriching dimension to the event was an art exhibit, which VIP Guests graced like Atty. Karen Jimeno, Gen. Benjamin Defensor, Mr. Jon Castro, Mr. Eric Candidato and Maj. The exhibit served as a fundraiser benefiting the club’s community initiatives, including educational programs and health outreach. Guests admired a diverse range of paintings, sculptures, and mixed-media artwork, with proceeds from sales directly supporting these projects.

Internationally acclaimed local artist and Father of Miniature Paintings, Nelson Castillo, shared his thoughts: “The Rotary Club Pasay Southeast Chapter’s commitment to blending art and service is truly commendable. It’s a model for how cultural events can fuel positive change. Participating in this exhibit was a wonderful opportunity to give back to the community through art. It’s inspiring to see how creativity can unite people and support meaningful causes.”

A Night to Remember

The Rotary Club Pasay Southeast Chapter’s Presidential Turnover and Induction ceremonies event was a resounding success, seamlessly blending a formal ceremony with cultural celebration and community engagement. By integrating an art exhibit fundraiser, entertainment, and interactive activities like the launching of the club’s flagship project, the club not only honored its leadership transition but also reinforced its dedication to fellowship and service.

Adding a personal touch, caricature artists offered guests playful and unique souvenirs, capturing their likenesses with humor and charm. This interactive element was a hit, fostering joyful interactions and lasting memories.

Past President and long-time member, Walter Buenaventura, summed up the evening: “This event truly reflected the heart of our club—service, creativity, and togetherness. I’m inspired by what we’ve accomplished and excited for what lies ahead, under the leadership of UCP Rynah F. Ventura.”

As the new Rotary year begins, the Pasay Southeast Chapter stands united, energized, and ready to continue making a meaningful difference in the lives of many.

CCP, Intramuros Administration revive ‘Intramuros Evenings’ with Ganito Na Kami Noon, Paano Na Ngayon?

This July, the Cultural Center of the Philippines and the Intramuros Administration bring history and heritage to life within the walls of the historic Walled City with Ganito Na Kami Noon, Paano Na Ngayon?, a bold theatrical work from the CCP Out-of-The-Box Series, set to open the Intramuros Evenings on July 19, 2025, 6:30 PM at Centro de Turismo, Intramuros, Manila.

Written by Jose Victor Torres and directed by CCP artistic director Dennis Marasigan, this devised theater piece draws inspiration from the works of three National Artists: Alejandro Roces (We the Filipinos Are Mild Drinkers), F. Sionil Jose (Po-on), and Eddie Romero (Ganito Kami Noon, Paano Kayo Ngayon?).

Featuring the Tanghalang Pilipino Actors Company, the story is set in the 1950s and follows Kulas, an aging farmer detained on suspicion of leading the Huk. He finds himself entangled in questions of identity, memory, and change.

Ganito Na Kami Noon, Paano Na Ngayon? features stellar performances by Arjhay Babon, Jonathan Tadioan, Marco Viaña, Mark Lorenz, Sarah Monay, Lhorvie Nuevo-Tadioan, Anya Evangelista, and Rey Correjado.

Ohm David takes charge of the set design, with Meliton Roxas Jr. for lighting, TJ Ramos for sound, Winter David for video graphics, Daniel Gregorio for costumes, and Rommel Serrano for overall styling.

As the IA celebrates their 46th year of stewardship, preservation, and vibrant promotion of the country’s famous walled city, their revival of Intramuros Evenings with the CCP not only enriches the cultural landscape of Intramuros, but also strengthens the long-standing partnership between the two institutions who have always championed the enduring legacy of Philippine arts and culture.

Ganito Na Kami Noon, Paano Na Ngayon? is an appropriate opening for the revival of Intramuros Evenings as it looks back at history to provide insight into our past,” said director  Marasigan.

First held in 1996, Intramuros Evenings share a long history with the CCP as it used to feature performances from CCP resident companies including the Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra (PPO), Ballet Philippines, and Tanghalang Pilipino.

Intramuros Evening: Ganito Na Kami Noon, Paano Na Ngayon? is free and open to the public, with seating on a first-come, first-served basis.

For latest updates on the CCP productions under Intramuros Evenings, follow the CCP official social media accounts on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Tiktok, and visit the CCP website (www.culturalcenter.gov.ph) for tickets and other inquiries.

The multi-level run, which first took off in 2022 at the 750-hectare Ayala Land property south of the metro, continued to draw families, casual runners, and elite athletes to its various race categories: the 21K half-marathon, the 10K, 5K, and 3K intermediate distances. The crowd favorite 1K Dog Run lets fur parents bond and run free with their pets amid the lush yet well-paved surroundings of Vermosa Estates.

The first Vermosa Green Run invited people to “go out, lace up, mask up and run for a greener tomorrow” in 2022, encouraging them to get active and re-discover the great outdoors after a three-year pandemic lockdown. It spearheaded the return to open air, face to face activities with the environment and sustainability-themed Run. True to its thrust, Vermosa Estates actively promotes physical activity and a healthy lifestyle.

Conducted by sports and fitness event organizer Pinoy Fitness, the first Green Run advocated for a greener tomorrow and supported Haribon Foundation’s Adopt-A-Seedling Program. Green Run 2025 still supports the Haribon Foundation and has added animal welfare group Pawssion Project and Takbo Kabitenyo, a running group that develops young athletes for local and international competitions, as beneficiaries. During the registration period, participants and guests were encouraged to bring their used plastics so they can be repurposed and converted into building materials for sustainable pathways and benches.

Considered by running regulars as “the most scenic run”, Angel Montevirgen from Cavite and a member of Takbo Kabitenyo said the running community looks forward to this run yearly. “It’s a lifestyle that you immerse yourself in and becomes a part of you. You look forward to it and get the right motivation for it – whether that be new clothes, new gear, new shoes or seeing friends and getting fit. It’s an opportunity to enjoy not only the benefits of running, but also the group camaraderie and being part of the whole running community.”

Pinoy Fitness Inc. founder and president Jeff Lo was very pleasantly surprised by the huge turnout of runners and pet dogs despite the threat of rain. “Runners actually enjoy running in the rain. It’s cooler, mas masaya. And I’m confident about Vermosa (as a running venue) because even if it rains, the roads are well-paved, safe and walang lubak. It’s a very green, very clean, very scenic venue – quite different from other runs. It’s fun and refreshing to see a venue where runners can actually go all out and enjoy themselves while finishing their runs.”

“I think the vision of Vermosa is to be the greener place to run,” Lo surmised. “You don’t just run races here, by the way. Runners and fitness enthusiasts can come and run here anytime, day or night – for free. They can run, train or just enjoy the outdoors. The Green Run itself is like a culmination of all the running activities you do here – an event that you look forward to that lets you experience closed roads and competing with others, for fun or for competition.”

Chrissy Roa, Ayala Land Estates’ Marketing and Communications group head explained that “Each step you take at the Vermosa Green Run supports a bigger cause. The Run advocates fitness and overall wellness, sustainability, and community support into one meaningful event.”

Now an established benchmark for purpose-driven lifestyle events, the Vermosa Green Run reinforces Ayala Land’s long-term vision for sustainability, using fitness as a powerful catalyst for environmental and social impact.
