The evolving Cinemalaya experience with Ayala Malls and Gateway Cineplex 18

The 21st edition of the Cinemalaya Philippine Independent Film Festival brings with it not just a fresh slate of bold, boundary-pushing Filipino films, but also a broader cinematic footprint.

To open more doors to Cinemalaya’s growing community of storytellers and cinephiles, the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP) and Cinemalaya Foundation Inc. continue to nurture its two-decades-old partnership with Ayala Malls Cinemas as their steadfast partner venue, while welcoming the Gateway Cineplex 18 to its list of Cinemalaya’s official partner venues.

Across the metro, Ayala Malls Cinemas integrate the Cinemalaya experience into the everyday rhythms of mall culture from Circuit, Makati to U.P. Town Center in Quezon City, and beyond. As in years past, Cinemalaya continues to thrive in these accessible, high-traffic locations with its comfortable theaters and reliable screening facilities.

Meanwhile, at Gateway Cineplex 18, nestled within the bustling Araneta City in Cubao, the Cinemalaya experience feels both intimate and expansive. The newly-opened Cineplex provided a fresh, revitalized space for Cinemalaya with its upgraded audiovisual systems. Select cinemas even hosted talkbacks, gala and block screenings, giving audiences a chance to dive deeper into the creative processes behind the films.

At the heart of it all remains Cinemalaya’s unwavering spirit, which continues to champion the festival through changing tides. Despite challenges from the ongoing redevelopment of the CCP Main Building to shifts in the country’s cultural and political climate, Cinemalaya endures and continues to set sail.

This year’s theme, “Layag: sa Alon, Hangin, at Unos,” resonates deeply. It is a tribute to the resilience of Filipino cinema and its auteurs, navigating the turbulence with courage, creativity, and an unrelenting drive to tell stories that matter.

This strategic expansion signals a promising future for Cinemalaya — one that’s more inclusive, mobile, and integrated with mainstream movie culture. By bringing independent Filipino cinema into commercial spaces, the festival not only reaches wider audiences but also subtly redefines where and how we watch local films.

More than just new venues, Ayala Malls Cinemas and Gateway Cineplex 18 became communal spaces, where diverse stories of identity, resistance, love, and loss echoed beyond the screen and into the hearts of every viewer willing to listen.

Continue supporting the 10 full-length and 10 short films of Cinemalaya 21 until October 12, 2025, at the Shangri-La Plaza, Ayala Malls Cinemas, and Gateway Cineplex 18.

Who will sail away with the Balanghai trophies?

The Cinemalaya Philippine Independent Film Festival not only recognizes talented Filipino independent filmmakers, but also distinguished individuals who take on the challenging task of selecting the films that will bring home the coveted Balanghai trophies.

For its 21st year, the Cinemalaya Main Competition jury includes: actor and director Christopher de Leon, internationally-acclaimed film director, producer and screenwriter Pepe Diokno, film critic and journalist Mark Schilling, educator, script consultant, and writer Sophia Wellington, and television and film writer Michiko Yamamoto. Each juror brings a wealth of experience and insight into the realm of cinema, contributing to a comprehensive assessment of the films presented at the country’s biggest independent film festival.

Christopher Strauss de Leon, more popularly known as Boyet de Leon, is a Filipino actor, and director. Often referred to as the “King of Philippine Drama”, he gained stardom for his leading man roles in numerous film and television productions in the period, romantic drama, and thriller genres. He trained under National Artist for Film Ricky Lee, and is an alumnus of Berlinale Talents in Germany, Torino Script Lab in Italy, and Produire Au Sud in France. She has worked with various writers and directors from emerging talents to the Oscar winner actor and producer Salma Hayek Pinault, and has designed and run international screenwriting workshops in Singapore and Manila including several workshops on Writing for Film at the Cinemalaya Institute. Other workshops include Pitching and Development in Cuba at the Escuela Internacional de Cine y Televisión (EICTV). Michiko Yamamoto has been writing for television and film since 2001. She is a writer of Reality MM Studios, collaborating with director Erik Matti and producer Dondon Monteverde for bold and genre-defying projects intended for local and international audiences. Her career in dance has been marked by international recognition, including being named Best Female Dancer at the Cheonan World Dance Festival in Korea (2011). In film, Feleo’s talent was quickly recognized: she won her first acting award in her debut movie Endo at Cinemalaya 2007, followed by another award for Sanglaan in 2009. She has since earned multiple nominations from prestigious award-giving bodies, including an Urian Best Actress nomination (2007) for Endo, and Best Supporting Actress nominations for OTJ: The Missing Eight (2023) and The Hearing (2025). Feleo has appeared in numerous acclaimed television dramas, balancing mainstream visibility with independent artistry. In 2009, she expanded her creative practice by directing her first short feature film, Labing-Labing. With a body of work that bridges stage, screen, and the written word, Feleo continues to evolve as a storyteller and performer, bringing depth and artistry to every medium she explores.

Pradip Kurbah, a self-taught filmmaker from Shillong, Meghalaya, is one of the leading voices in Khasi-language cinema. Through his work, he has brought stories from Northeast India to national and international audiences, blending cultural identity and universal themes.  A three-time recipient of the National Film Award, Kurbah continues to be a pioneering force in regional cinema from Meghalaya. In addition to filmmaking, he has served as a jury member at several prestigious national and international film festivals, representing independent and regional Indian cinema on global platforms. Kurbah’s 2025 film, The Elysian Field (Ha Lyngkha Bneng), earned major recognition at the 47th Moscow International Film Festival, winning the Golden Saint George for Best Film, the Silver Saint George for Best Director, and the NETPAC Award for Best Asian Film. Curiosity and Connection: Derek Tumala and his artistic journey

“Our practice serves as a model on how to live and articulate what life or living is all about. “-Derek Tumala, CCP Thirteen Artists Awardee 2024

As a child, visual artist Derek Tumala, one of the 2024 CCP Thirteen Artists Award recipients, has always been curious about the world around him. This innate curiosity eventually led him to pursue art as a career.

During his formative years, the artist often found himself reading through his family’s encyclopedia collection, a habit that sparked his interest in the connections between the natural world, geography, and world history.

He eventually entered art school, where he learned the fundamental principles of art-making and began to merge these with his interest in science and nature. After graduating, Tumala discovered a much broader spectrum of creative expression beyond traditional media. This exploration became the foundation of his artistic practice. Among the many art movements available to contemporary artists, Tumala gravitates toward media art practices that focus on research and the interplay between art and ecology. He engages in art that is experimental, queer, and challenges traditional notions of materiality.

“I taught myself about emerging technologies and familiarized myself with contemporary possibilities. I expanded my art practice by traveling to different places, researching and working in different kinds of art spaces – from independent, artist-initiated to art institutions, museums, and commercial galleries,” shared Tumala.

Throughout his creative journey, Tumala has drawn consistent inspiration from everyday life. He finds meaning in both the ordinary and the extraordinary, whether it is reading a book, watching a film, traveling, visiting museums, or simply observing the world around him.

Even in moments others might consider dull, Tumala uncovers sources of inspiration – from the surreal, such as falling in love or kissing a stranger, to the abstract, like doing nothing or just being alone. For artists like him, anything can be a muse.

His unwavering commitment to the artist’s path stems from a firm belief in the role of art as a vehicle for truth. “Our practice serves as a model on how to live and articulate what life or living is all about.” related Tumala.

Contributing to society’s psyche

As an artist, Tumala aspires to be seen and heard through his work. His goal is to create art and share it with others. If it can contribute to society’s collective psyche, he considers it a personal success.

For the upcoming Thirteen Artists Awards exhibition at the National Museum in the Philippines this October, Tumala is preparing a piece centered on the theme of “loss and damage.” The work stems from his recent research on the climate crisis and its slow but steady impact. He also hopes to create a dialogue with the museum’s collection.

“I want to account for these scenarios in the form of a two-channel video. I hope to make use of the data on endangered animals in the Philippines at the National Museum of Natural History and then juxtapose it with my sentiments and realizations on the vanishing practices of artmaking. What we, artists, experience today is a slow decline of the artistic practice due to the inevitable consequences of capitalism, socio-political and technological degradation,” shared Tumala.

He thought about calling the piece – the “Vanishing Tribes,” featuring the two elements – the animals and the artists, which he categorizes as “endangered.” Tumala is no stranger to criticism, which he describes as a double-edged sword. “Criticism can either be a stab or a prick. In the end, you fight for what you believe in with a nudge.
Don’t kill, persevere,” he enthused.

Despite the challenges of a career in the arts, Tumala encourages young artists to embrace uncertainty and keep the faith. “Enjoy life, work hard, be persistent, focus, and believe in yourself.”

Now in its 55th year, the CCP TAA honors visual artists under the age of 40 who seek to “restructure, restrengthen, and renew artmaking and art thinking that lend viability to Philippine art.” The CCP Visual Arts and Museum Division (CCP VAMD) received 82 nomination forms from various art groups, museum and gallery directors and curators, art critics, art educators, and previous TAA recipients around the country.

After careful and thorough deliberations of the 108 nominated artists, the committee named Catalina Africa, Denver Garza, Russ Ligtas, Ella Mendoza, Henrielle Baltazar Pagkaliwangan, Issay Rodriguez, Luis Antonio Santos, Joshua Serafin, Jel Suarez, Tekla Tamoria, Derek Tumala, Vien Valencia, and Liv Vinluan as recipients of this prestigious award.

SM and DOST Lead the Future of Sustainability

SM Prime Holdings, Inc., through SM Supermalls, in partnership with the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) and ARISE Private Sector Alliance for Disaster Resilient Societies, officially staged the inaugural SM Sustainability Expo (SUSTEX 2025) at the SMX Convention Center Aura, Taguig.

The two-day event, themed “Innovation for Environmental Stewardship,” brought together over 50 exhibitors, government agency leaders, the private sector, the international community, and sustainability advocates to showcase cutting-edge solutions that advance a greener and more resilient future.

Symbolic Opening: “Beat of Sustainability”

The Expo opened with the ceremonial “Beat of Sustainability,” led by DOST Secretary Renato Solidum and SM Prime Executive Committee Chairman Hans T. Sy, who together struck the Solidrum—a bamboo drum shell developed by the DOST – Forest Products Research and Development Institute (FPRDI).

They were joined by SM Supermalls President Steven Tan, SM Prime Vice President Jessica Sy-Bell, and SM Supermalls Vice President Engr. Liza Silerio and other dignitaries played the angklung, a UNESCO-recognized bamboo instrument. The performance symbolized harmony and collective action in advancing sustainability.

Leadership Perspectives

In his opening remarks, Hans T. Sy emphasized that sustainability lies at the heart of SM’s business and highlighted the importance of partnerships—“Public-private partnerships such as this show how science and business can unite to address some of the most pressing environmental challenges of our time. We encourage more of this as the private sector can provide support to projects by local scientists.”

Secretary Solidum echoed this view, noting that SUSTEX demonstrates how innovation and science can strengthen national resilience and drive a circular economy, as championed by similar DOST efforts.

“Through OneDOST4U: Solutions and Opportunities for All, we ensure that the science, technologies, and innovations we develop are not just theories in journals or prototypes in laboratories—they are real solutions, accessible to businesses, communities, and every Filipino. This is also what we mean by Agham na Ramdam—science that is not distant; science that is felt, lived, and experienced by people in their everyday lives,” Solidum shared.

“My call is simple: enough talk. We’ve had summits, forums, and declarations that fill up shelves and inboxes. What we need now is proof. Businesses must set their sights on real, tangible goals—not pretty brochures, not slogans, but numbers you can measure, promises you can check.”

Innovation Marketplace: Over 50 Exhibitors

SUSTEX 2025 featured more than 50 exhibitors showcasing technologies, initiatives, and products that reflect Filipino ingenuity and global collaboration. Notable exhibits included SM Prime and SM GUUN’s “Waste-Free Future” campaign, which highlighted their joint initiative with Japan’s GUUN Environmental Company on advanced waste management.

ARISE Philippines showcased efforts to advance disaster resilience through private sector collaboration. The DENR’s Loop Forward Program promoted circularity and large-scale waste reduction. The DOST-FPRDI centerpiece featured sustainable Lalang Pandan furniture, essential oils from Philippine plants, and bamboo musical instruments. Meanwhile, the DOST-CHRG presented innovations in electric vehicle technology.

A Catalyst for Action

Running from August 29 to 30, the Expo featured interactive sessions, product showcases, and knowledge exchanges. The event reinforced SM’s continuing sustainability roadmap, including its Waste-Free Future campaign and commitment to achieve Net Zero by 2040.

“May this Expo be more than an event. May it be a catalyst for collaboration, a hub for practical solutions, and a reminder that business can be a force for good—when guided by purpose, discipline, and partnership,” Sy concluded.

Celebrating 40 Super Years of Evolving with Every You, SM Supermalls—one of Southeast Asia’s largest mall developers—continuously evolving to lead the way in sustainable development by integrating green design, energy efficiency, disaster resilience, and environmental stewardship into its 88 malls in the Philippines, all while creating inclusive spaces that enrich communities, support climate action, and ensure a better, more sustainable future for generations of Filipino shoppers.

Irene Sarmiento Makes History at White Ravens Festival

Irene Sarmiento, award-winning writer of children’s book Tabon Girl and young adult novel Stray Cats, is the first author from the Philippines to be invited to this year’s White Ravens Festival, held from July 13 to 17 at the Blutenberg Castle in Munich, Germany.

A native of Quezon City, she moved from the Philippines to Texas in 2011 and now works as a pediatric occupational therapist for children with special needs in northern Colorado.

In an interview with the National Book Development Board (NBDB), Sarmiento shared that “it was in college when I won my first Palanca [award] in the now defunct future fiction category and made me realize I have two lives [studying occupational therapy and writing]. But I never really questioned whether I should stop or keep writing.”

She added, “As a writer, I recognize that in this unequal world, we who are marginalized have to assert our humanity, and this is my way of doing that. I am a Filipino writer talking to multiple cultures in my works. I am both a writer and a healthcare practitioner.”

The White Ravens Festival is dedicated to international literature for children and young adults, bringing together authors and illustrators from different parts of the world to read from their most recent works, lead writing workshops and other interactive events, and discuss their life and works. The festival has hosted various prominent authors such as Ingo Siegner from Germany, Micaela Chirif from Peru, Shaw Kuzki from Japan, Anete Melece from Latvia, Tuutikki Tolonen from Finland, MG Leonard from the United Kingdom, André Letria from Portugal, Yves Grevet from France, Jamshid Khanian from Iran, and Ondřej Buddeus from the Czech Republic, to name a few.

It is hosted by the International Youth Library (IJB) in Munich, Germany.

“The invitation was a huge surprise. It is important because it allowed me to tell them about the Philippines. It prompted the audience to know more about us [Filipinos]. It helped me to bring our works to the global stage,” Sarmiento said.

Aside from a radio interview, as part of the festival, she attended eight interactive reading events across Germany with 10 different participating schools (and with 50 to 150 students in attendance each session) from July 13 to 17 this year. The event was under the patronage of the Bavarian State Minister for Science and the Arts, and featured renowned, multi-award-winning writers.

Sarmiento’s works, often about children overcoming challenges, have received recognition from prestigious organizations such as The Palanca Memorial Foundation, the Philippine Graphic/Fiction Awards, and Stories to Change the World.

“My family and I always love books and stories. When I was eight years old, I won a short story writing competition called Young Minds, and it was the first time that I got really published, which started me on that trajectory,” said Sarmiento.

Her novel, Stray Cats, was named one of the Kids’ Choice winners at the National Children’s Book Award in 2024. It tells the story of Elisa Paz, an eighth grader in search of her best friend.

Her tips to aspiring Filipino writers? “You should speak in your own voice. Who knows? One of these days, someone might listen.”

Sarmiento’s participation in the festival coincides with the Philippines’ preparations as the Guest of Honour at the Frankfurt Book Fair on October 15 to 19, 2025.
